When I mentioned the witch hazel shrubs yesterday, Max said he bet they looked pretty. Of course that inspired me to get out there with the camera and take a few pics of the state of autumn illuminating the trees and shrubbery. Seven of the ten shrubs are doing well. Three are still hanging on. The deer love to nibble them, and I got one pretty bad with the trimmer a couple years ago. They all were given osmocote (pelleted fertilizer long release) this year. They are gorgeous with the yellow leaves. At the end of the row, away from the road is a cottonwood tree that is also yellow.

I’m not sure what kind of oak trees they are but they look different than the other, bigger one in the front yard. Such a pretty deep red color! The bright red shrub is euonymous. The one pictured is from a cutting from the three in the the front of the house.

The last pics are of the birdhouse gourds. There are seven total and one of those the top rotted off so it may just be turned into a vase. The different shapes this season are interesting. I probably won’t grow them in a raised bed again. I may skip next year until I can get the rest of the ones from last year and the ones from this year completed.

Lovely pics from your garden, Lisa, as always. I’ve never been an outright tree hugger, but I can tell you one thing: I increasingly appreciate the beauty of nature as I get older. Without meaning to sound preachy, we need to do more to preserve it, even that means some short-term sacrifices!
