POPO2023 Day 20

Georges Seurat, “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” Dogs teach us how to love They pull us into playing – one more time They unconditionally accept and forgive us They are grace made manifest They are loyal to us and always happy to see us All they want from us is our…

POPO2023 Day 19

Henri Matisse, “Interior with Egyptian Curtain” Cats offer us a chance at mindfulness if one is on our lap and we choose not to read, phone surf, or stream. Instead, pet and notice her silky fur, see how her eyes close, listen to her purr as you breathe in lilacs on the breeze.

POPO2023 Day 18

Henri Matisse, “The Pinapple” [sic] Angel Flies with One Wing Her small, gaunt white figure prays at the garden shoppe. I write her a poem. She stays with me through the weekend. Monday, I buy her; bring her home, wheel-barrow to patio, she falls. Broken, she flies with one wing.

POPO2023 Day 17

Georges Seurat, “The Circus” Killing Blackbirds Small black-feathered bodies plummet one by one; bb gun begins at dawn. Seeing their comrades fall does not deter; their gluttony of suet continues. Cardinals and chickadees watch and wait. Note:  this is a fiction/fantasy.  No blackbirds were harmed.

POPO2023 Day 16

(misidentified on the postcard) Georges Seurat, “Chahut” First, a sour dinner experience; then, a walk across the street to the symphony. Full house, full stage, season finale. Quantity is not quality. Program’s long list of benefactors smile, oblivious. The conductor smiles bravely.

POPO2023 Day 15

Georges Seurat, “The river Seine at La Grande-Jatte” Chirps of birds have turned from plaintive to excited. Worms dance and new insects emerge. The bird bath splashes with roof runoff. Dust and pollen are dashed into mud.

POPO2023 Day 14

Georges Seurat, “Courbevoie, Landscape with Turret” I take my daily stroll around the yard; raindrops gift me their coolness. I survey the tomatoes vibrating with light. Long-planted seeds are sprouting. Color is returning after the drought.
