Prompt
Do you think that animals feel love? Do you think a dog can feel love? A cat? What about a cow, a snake, or a slug? What makes you think so?
If one has the capacity to feel, one has the capacity to feel love. Feelings happen through nerves, which are interpreted in the brain. As far as I know, every living thing has a “brain” of some kind that controls it. It might be a harder sell to say that a one-celled living thing has a brain and can love, but who am I to say they can’t?
Any larger living thing, with more complex body systems and ways of reproduction, has to have a method of attracting males and females to each other. You can call it hormonal attraction, but does that mean it isn’t love?
When you start getting to the “highest” life forms (notice how I went from low to high?), the ones with complicated social structures, love in a way most visible to us is apparent.
Is love merely a survival mechanism that keeps species going? Maybe. I think not.

I agree! We have no issue with saying the higher mammals feel pain, fear, etc., but then balk at love. Interesting! Says more about us that we deny this to them… opens up the door to how we treat them.

Yes, your last sentence says it all. If they are more or less objects for our use, then we can do whatever we want :(

“A new study from South Africa observed wild snake mothers protecting and warming their young for weeks after they emerged from eggs.” https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/03/python-mothers-care-for-young-southern-african-snakes-spd/ I take it you don’t like snakes?

Ok..for their young I can buy it…no love for them…deathly afaid. My reacurring nightmare since childhood is falling in a snake pit.

I grew up in the country and rattlesnakes were all about. Never was bit but have been terrified. I’ve never touched one in my life…Spiders…don’t bother me…snakes do

that would be very scary living somewhere with snakes all about. man. we have them here but not rattlesnakes and any around race away as quick as possible to get gone. little spiders are ok, the jumpers better not come close. my fear animal is bears, as we talked about before. the thing about snakes is they can be coiled up anywhere and you can accidentally step on them.

We have rattlesnakes, copperheads and others…we have a variety! Sorry I nodded off last night. I have a fear of heights and snakes…my two childhood fears.

Aren’t the copperheads water snakes? Will you go into high rises?

No…those are Cottonmouths…found in water probably the most dangerous of them all. Talking about this…I was thinking…it probably started when I was playing in a creek and was goofing off…lifted up a rock and there was a cottonmouth…I took off running and would be running to this day if I wouldn’t have tripped and fell…. That probably started it all.
High rises are ok… helicopter would be a no…on top of a building near the edge…is a big no. I white knuckle a plane rides everytime.

Ah, I can see where that experience would fix that in your mind with terror. The fear then the fall. I was terrified of miller moths for many years. I was about 10 and had my shirt tucked into my pants. Someone threw a moth down my shirt and it was fluttering around and I freaked out. Now I still hate moths of every kind but I don’t freak out anymore. Yes, probably the most harmless bug of any kind. I don’t like planes anymore either after it hit me how high those things are in the sky.

Fears are fears…doesn’t have to be logical or dangerous…they just are. That fluttering moth stayed with you like my adventure did.
I’ve also developed fears while older…I once LOVED closed spaces…I would seek them out…then after having an MRI…I almost freaked in that tube. Now I am the opposite… I’m claustrophobic. No rational reason…
Hope this didn’t bore you…fears are interesting…the non obvious ones.

Not boring at all. I agree fears are interesting. They drive so much of human behavior! I don’t think I could do an MRI. They don’t give you a sedative before you go in? I am a bit claustrophobic also.

When I went the second time I told them…give me a valium or Zanax…they did so I was alright.
I remember seeing a very young Michael Jackson special in the early seventies about him sleeping in this tube looking thing. I thought that was the coolest thing I ever saw…it was almost round and had a curved lid…
Now that I think about it…I think dang…that is not much different than a coffin. No that would not work now.

I hope you don’t need any more MRIs. Michael Jackson is a (dead) freak. Sounds like he was practicing in his sensory deprivation tank.

That was when he was like 9 or so…yea I liked him better as a kid than I did as an adult…music also.

About Michael Jackson, it’s nothing personal, his mind bent and he became dangerous. He should have been in prison for his crimes, period. His wealth gave him access and immunity, and that’s so wrong.

He was one of the weirdest…even for celebrities person I’ve read about. I’ve never been a fan…Jackson 5 yes…him no.
Yea I always suspected he was guilty…too much smoke.
