Today’s selection comes from yet another movie soundtrack, Jonny Greenwood’s score from, “Phantom Thread”. The film was lush and beautiful with strange elements to it. It is also reported to be Daniel Day-Lewis’ last movie. That, my friends, is a sad thing. He’s one of the great actors out there and his retirement is a loss to the field.
I went to Spin Magazine and took a look at Winston Cook-Wilson’s review of Jonny’s work. Below is a short blurb. Click on the link, which will take you to the full review if you are interested.
Some fans who seek out the soundtrack may do so just so they can hear the movie’s primary theme again. It features a stark Chopin-like keyboard melody culminating with a rhythm that recalls a marble being dropped on a table. Its rosier complement, and the film’s most ubiquitous piece, is the sunny “House of Woodcock,” a series of florid orchestral swells which seem to evoke the light streaming in through the dressmaker’s tall windows. In the film, the theme and its variants generally signify some new awakening in the relationship between the dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and the former waitress Alma, or the renewed period of creativity that follows.

Loved the movie, though for some reason I thought there were going to be secret political messages sewn in the dresses. Idk where I got that idea.

Is the movie worth seeing? Just having Lewis in it is enough of a reason to watch it. I guess if he is really retiring he won’t be able to play me in the movie… maybe John Malkovich.

I think it’s a good movie. It’s strong on not exactly a battle of wills as much as an ongoing parrying of them. The sets are beautiful as is the home. ha ha on who will play you in the movies. Malkovich is a good second choice.

Originally Philip Seymour Hoffman was going to play the role… I rented the movie a few weeks ago but never got to it- need to put in another order for it. I hope he does come back, he’s too young to quit!

Yes, I know, in a way you are drawing them, but not the outline, you bring them to life. I’ve got a book here from ages back – mandalas I’ve been thinking I might get to them sometime this year.
