Circles represent the spirit and the cosmos. They are composed of something and nothing. They have no beginning and no end. They are known for being able to create a fortress of psychic protection. Examples of circles:
Sun – masculine circle
Moon – feminine circle
Wheel – the passage of time
Arthur’s table – symbol of equality
From lightforcenetwork, The Druids believed in 3 circles of existence.
The Druids believed in a system of reincarnation involving three states of being. This is known as the Circles of Existence and it consisted of three circles representing worlds. The Druids were believers in a form of evolution of souls and that they passed through several successive graduated bodies until at last reaching the human species.
At a different site, it says that “everything” started out as two Primary Existences, God and Cythrawl (Annwn), where God represented energy toward life and Annwn represented energy towards destruction, the abyss, and chaos. In the beginning, God and Annwn spoke and Manred formed. Manred is described as the primal substance of the universe, a multitude of minute, indivisible particles, where God is complete in each and each is a part of the whole God, which comprises the totality of being.
To the Druids, all life began in Annwn, or the Underworld, or Cythrawl. This is the home of the Cauldron of rebirth – the smelting pot of Spirit.

Per Joelle’s Sacred Grove:
CYTHRAWL (Welsh) [KEETH-rawl] In Welsh cosmology, Cythrawl archetypally symbolizes the opposing male creative force which represents destruction rather than creation. While this sounds very negative to non-Pagans, Pagans accept the energy as leading towards nothingness and being as necessary to existence as that which leads to creation. Cythrawl’s energy has been personified as deity, and his home is in the Otherworld where his energy is first manifested before appearing in the mortal realm.
Once born the Spirit is within the first world known as the Circle of Abred.

Lightforcenet goes on to say
The Circle of Abred (the Circle of Evolutions) consists of animal and plant incarnations up to the human level. It is characterized by suffering, ignorance and compulsion. Known as the world where mankind begins in the lower state of existence, it contains a mixture of good and evil, and mankind is taught to make the right choices and to balance his errors. From this lowest world it was believed that man would pass through the Gate of Mortality, into the next circle.
The second world is the Circle of Gwynfydd (the Circle of Felicity). Known as a place of Bliss or Happiness, it is through this world that men have to travel after they had passed through their terrestrial lives. It consists of spiritual states of being from the human level up and is characterized by joy, freedom and knowledge. Here, there would be neither want nor adversity, sorrow nor death. However if an individual permitted evil affections and passions to govern him, then back he would descend out of the Circle of Happiness, and Death would return him to the lowest circle where he would suffer punishment in proportion to his offenses.
The third world is the Circle of Ceugant (the Circle of Space) is also known as the Circle of Infinity. It can only be traversed by the Divine. It holds nothing but God, who is spirit and the one governing force of the universe and nature which watches over us all. It is the ultimate space of creation from which all came and into which all will return.
I found a myth about Annwn.

There are a lot of images out there on the hounds. This is just one.

Interesting myth lesson on different types of circles! I know nothing of these things but I certainly do believe in life after death where someday my earthly circle that is broken will be whole again when I see those I love once again on the other side of that celestial shore I know as Heaven. :)
Hop by when you get a chance for my Little Mermaid art sketch series feature Carlotta and happy A2Zing, my friend!

What a plethora of information here – thank you for putting it together. I’m actually bookmarking this post for later, because it feels like there’s a lot of inspiration for fantasy settings here, and I want to reread it later, when I’m world building again. :)

So happy you can put the info to use. There is a huge amount of info out there on Annwn and the rest that you could use to build a world.

I have such a primal thing for circles <3
My girlfriends call our group of friends "our circle" and while I never think of that phrase as being witchy, or pagan ,it really is. Funny how all of these ancient things get woven into our lives. I love that.
