First off, let me say that I love the prompt for this week, Richa. Rain is the life-giver! We are a water planet and most of the life-forms on the planet could not survive without water. Because water is such a vital element in each of our lives, it stands to reason that certain feelings are associated with the rain. Unless you are a farmer, you live in a desert climate, or your location is suffering prolonged drought, you won’t jump for joy when the rain begins. Much of the time rain is associated gloom, doom, or, you guessed it, lost love, where the tears follow. Songwriters have been writing about rain for forever. I wonder when the first rain song was written and sung?

As part of the prompt challenge this week, I went out and found a few of my favorite rain songs. Most fit into the lost love or lovelorn motif, but the very first one is from 1942 – yes, 1942! – and the movie, “Bambi,” is different from that this. “Little April Shower” shows Bambi experiencing his first rain.

The next one is The Eurhythmics, performing, “Here Comes the Rain Again” where the rain is, “falling on my head like a memory, falling on my head like a new emotion.”

Dee Clark sings, “Raindrops,” where “Rain keeps falling from my eye-eyes, oh no they can’t be teardrops, for a man ain’t supposed to cry”

BJ Thomas sings, “Raindrops keep falling on my head”, and takes a more optimistic tone with, “The blues they send to meet me won’t defeat me, it won’t be long till happiness steps up to greet me.”

Eric Clapton changes it up with, “Let it Rain” and sings “The rain is falling through the mist of sorrow that surrounded me, the sun could never thaw away the bliss that lays around me, let it rain.. let your love rain down on me.”

Brook Benton sings “Rainy night in Georgia” and “believes it’s raining all over the world” because of the love he lost.

Gordon Lightfoot sings, “Early Morning Rain” and is “In the early mornin’ rain, with no place to go” as he watches the love of his life fly off in a jet plane.

Prince sings, “Purple Rain” first dedicating it to his father, then saying he wants to see his lover, “laughing in the purple rain.”
