Minerva had come and gone from this world many times and had cycled through many forms. Her most boring form had been that of a starfish, but when she rose to heaven’s sanctuary afterwards, she was rewarded with a return as human with (human) palms itching to write to deadlines. She started this life’s career as a librarian, like her parents who were both librarians at the New York City Public Library (NYCPL.) Awkward socially and often the scapegoat of insensitive teachers, Minerva lost herself in books. Like Sebastian in Blade Runner, whose toys were his friends, Minerva’s library books were her friends.

Like Viktor Frankenstein, Minerva wanted to build friends of her own, so she became an author. Minerva’s first book was promoted by the NYCPL as one of their own had written it. It was a hit. The day, “Itching for a Deadline” was catalogued by the Library of Congress and copies were placed in every branch of the city library system, Minerva stood in the center of the great hall of the library and looked up as she dropped to her knees to pray to the benevolence of Heaven’s Sanctuary Council for this life.
