I know it sounds strange to say that I never knew the name to this song, as it was heard as part of the complete “Rattle and Hum” album.  I love everything about this song, but particularly the guitars, thrumming out their pulsing beats.

Rattle and Hum is the sixth studio album by Irish rock band U2, and a companion rockumentary film directed by Phil Joanou. Both were released in October 1988. Following the breakthrough success of the band’s previous studio album, The Joshua Tree, the Rattle and Hum project captures their continued experiences with American roots music on the Joshua Tree Tour, further incorporating elements of blues rock, folk rock, and gospel music into their sound.

The bass-heavy “God Part II” is an introduction to the Achtung Baby sound, and is a sequel of sorts to John Lennon’s “God”, his stark denunciation of everyone from Elvis Presley to Jesus Christ and has the same kind of lyrical structure.

The lyrics, “Don’t believe in Goldman” refer to Albert Goldman, who wrote an unflattering biography of Lennon after his death…by way of Lennon’s song “Instant Karma!”:

I don’t believe in Goldman

Instant Karma’s gonna get him

Additionally, the song alludes to Bruce Cockburn’s “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”, in the lyric,

“Heard a singer on the radio late last night/He says he’s gonna kick the darkness ’til it bleeds daylight.”

God Part II hasn’t been played live since 1990. (not sure if this is true or not, got it from songfacts.com comments.)
