#SLS — Daddy’s Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car — U2

song lyric sunday

Jim Adams is the appreciated host of Song Lyric Sunday.  Jim says:
our prompt for this week is Dad/Father/Barbecue.  Here are the “rules”:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not.
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
  • Ping back to this post will eventually work, as long as you are being patient, but you can also place your link in the comments if you don’t like to wait.
  • Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
  • Feel free to suggest future prompts.
  • Have fun and enjoy the music.

Today’s song comes from U2, off of their Zooropa album.  I wrote about another song from Zooropa about a month ago.  You can read my post here.  The name of this song is, “Daddy’s Gonna to Pay for Your Crashed Car.”   The distorted “Daddy’s Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car” was described by Bono as “industrial blues.” It begins with a snippet of fanfare from Lenin’s Favourite Songs and samples MC 900 Ft. Jesus’ song “The City Sleeps”.

The studio version:

Here is a live version of the song, with a comment in the youtube section that says, “The intro song is a classic 19 century Russian folk song “Dubinushka” (Дубинушка), in English “The little oak stick” “

You’re a precious stone
You’re out on your own
You know everyone in the world
But you feel alone
Daddy won’t let you weep
Daddy won’t let you ache
Daddy gives you as much as you can take
A-ha sha-la, a-ha sha-la
Daddy’s gonna pay for your crashed car

A little uptight
You’re a baby’s fist
Butterfly kisses up and down your wrist
When you see daddy coming
You’re licking your lip
Nails bitten down to the quick
A-ha sha-la, a-ha sha-la
Daddy’s gonna pay for your crashed car
Daddy’s gonna pay for your crashed car

You’ve got a head full of traffic
You’re a siren’s song
You cry for mama
And daddy’s right along
He gives you the keys to a flamin’ car
Daddy’s with you wherever you are
Daddy’s a comfort
Daddy’s your best friend
Daddy’ll hold your hand right up to the end
A-ha sha-la, a-ha sha-la
Daddy’s gonna pay for your crashed car
Daddy’s gonna pay for your crashed car

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday’s

Songwriters: Adam Clayton / Dave Evans / Larry Mullen / Paul Hewson

I remember these songs…saw them on this tour. Not my favorite album by them but it was different.
