Two bonus pics!  Last (Sunday) night I went out to the car to retrieve the cat toy my daughter in-law gave me for Mlady.  It was just light enough to notice a dark shape on the hood of the car.  I thought it was a leaf or a large locust, but lo and behold it was this little critter.  The car was still warm and it was still bone dry outside, so I nabbed the critter and put him/her over by the side of the house and then wet the critter down.  Today (Monday) it rained most of the day so all’s well that ends well.  The froggies are going nuts out there with their songs right now.

Per wikipedia:
Us is the sixth studio album (and ninth album overall) by the English singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel, originally released in 1992. It was remastered, with most of Gabriel’s catalogue, in 2002. Singles taken from the album included “Digging in the Dirt”, “Steam”, “Blood of Eden” (an early version of the track was previously featured in the 1991 Wim Wenders film Until the End of the World), and “Kiss That Frog”. Promotional singles included “Come Talk to Me” and “Secret World”.

On this album Gabriel explored the pain of recent personal problems; his failed first marriage, his relationship with actress Rosanna Arquette, and the growing distance between himself and his first daughter. The album was supported by the Secret World Live tour, named after its closing track, “Secret World”. The tour spawned a live album and a concert film.

“Digging in the Dirt” is a 1992 (but wikipedia says it was recorded in 1989) –and the first– single taken from Us. The music video for the single was directed by John Downer and utilized stop motion animation, a technique used in the videos for Gabriel’s earlier hits “Sledgehammer” and “Big Time”. The work was painstaking, especially for Gabriel himself who was required to lie still for hours at a time over the course of several days. The video won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 1993. The woman in the video is played by Francesca Gonshaw.

I love the metaphor of “digging in the dirt to find the places we got hurt.” Getting to the deep stuff is messy but so worth it to one’s quality of life.  Gabriel’s voice has an exquisite range and the places where he goes tender resonate with the soul.

Something in me, dark and sticky
All the time it’s getting strong
No way of dealing with this feeling
Can’t go on like this too long

This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
I told you
I told you
I told you
I told you
This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
I told you
I told you
I told you
I told you

Don’t talk back
Just drive the car
Shut your mouth
I know what you are
Don’t say nothing
Keep your hands on the wheel
Don’t turn around
This is for real
Digging in the dirt
Stay with me, I need support
I’m digging in the dirt
To find the places I got hurt
Open up the places I got hurt

The more I look, the more I find
As I close on in, I get so blind
I feel it in my head, I feel it in my toes
I feel it in my sex, that’s the place it goes

This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
I told you
I told you
I told you
I told you
This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
This time you’ve gone too far
I told you
I told you
I told you
I told you

I’m digging in the dirt
Stay with me I need support
I’m digging in the dirt
To find the places I got hurt
To open up the places I got hurt

Digging in the dirt
To find the places we got hurt
To find the places we got hurt
To find the places we got hurt
To find the places we got hurt
To find the places we got hurt
To find the places we got hurt
To find the places we got hurt

    1. The album I actually listened to last night was his 2011 New Blood. He “refashioned” some of his best hits, and to be honest, not to my liking. Maybe it’s just me, but the music sounded scary and almost creepy. I wonder if he’s struggling with mental health? I ended up choosing something off of an album I already had.

      1. I haven’t heard that one… sounds like I am not missing much. Looking in the last 27 years he has released 3 studio albums…maybe like Billy Joel he has nothing more to say. ??

    1. Each person’s taste is their own, but I think the video perfectly reflects the song. Is this the first time you saw the video? He’s made a couple others with the stop-motion animation. They are works of art in and of themselves.

  1. I like the video… I don’t know too much of his stuff but I knew this one…I like frogs, we had a big rain and they are all over the place where I live.
