Thursday Inspiration 22 — The Lass on the Iron Horse Headed West

Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco California

I’ve been high, I’ve been low,
I’ve been yes, and I’ve been oh, hell no!
I’ve been rock ‘n roll and disco,
Won’t you save me San Francisco?
–”Save me Sanfrancisco”, by Train

Daddy done touched me one last time
I thought as I hopped on the Western Line
Curled in a boxcar with a dozen hobos
Hair tucked in my hat, no girlish promos
Crossed the Big Muddy at crack of dawn
Flat-lined prairies click-clacked a sad song
Gnawing on jerky, swiggin from my jug
Pissed in the corner, hobo shot up drugs
Nights so cold, pallet like a board
When will we get there, Dear Lord!
Sunrise glimpse, foothills to the west
Almost ocean, where I hear things are best
Won’t be long now ’til I’m in the promised land
Gold flows like honey from the miner’s hands
Daddy made me easy, and I sing like a bird
Tweets and tricks’ll richen me thoughts purred
Down went the track to the beauty on the sea
Hopped off the iron horse, God shine on me!

Note: This poem is set in the 1800’s, before the Golden Gate Bridge, rock ‘n roll, and disco. But the muse wrote it, not me. One of the better indicators that time travel exists in some form!

This week’s theme is high and the picture is above. Here is the song snippet from “Save Me, San Francisco” recorded by Train in 2009:

I’ve been high, I’ve been low,
I’ve been yes, and I’ve been oh, hell no!
I’ve been rock ‘n roll and disco,
Won’t you save me San Francisco?

So many times the high hopes shift into a much grimmer reality…

A very visual poem, it draws you in and carries you through to the very end.

I’ve only been there in film. Would love to see it for real.

      1. It’s lovely. But, bring a coat — Mark Twain said the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco . :-D
