Oct 22 letter L

Today’s Celtic letter “L” is dedicated to k.d.lang.  A voice like an angel of the angels!  Thanks to Jim Adams for giving me, “Kathryn Dawn Lang Canadian pop and country singer-songwriter.”

I bought the soundtrack to this movie back when they (movie/soundtrack) came out, as at that time I was – and still am, btw – a rabid fan of author Tom Robbins. As rabid a fan as I also am of Chuck Palahniuk. Interesting that both of these erudite, transgressive fiction-writing gentlemen live in the Great Northwest. Must be something in the air/water/atmosphere that generates literary genius.

Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is a 1993 American romantic comedy-drama film based on Tom Robbins’ 1976 novel of the same name. The film was directed by Gus Van Sant (credited as Gus Van Sant, Jr.) and starred an ensemble cast led by Uma Thurman, Lorraine Bracco, Angie Dickinson, Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, Keanu Reeves, John Hurt, and Rain Phoenix. Robbins himself was the narrator. The soundtrack was sung entirely by k.d. lang. The film was dedicated to the late River Phoenix.

Tom Robbins’ novel revolves around “Sissy Hankshaw, a woman born with enormously large thumbs who considers her mutation a gift. The novel covers various topics, including free love, feminism, drug use, birds, political rebellion, animal rights, body odor, religion, and yams.”

The soundtrack was released on November 2, 1993 by Rhino Records. k.d. lang performed the music. The album was composed by k.d. lang and Ben Mink. The soundtrack went top 10 in Australia and top 5 in New Zealand (#10 and #4, respectively), and also peaked at #82 on the Billboard 200 in the United States.

The music on it crosses genres, but there is no question the musicians are top notch. It isn’t surprising that several of the songs are country, as the story is about a cowgirl and a ranch. It’s been a long time since I listened to it. It was both surprising and refreshing how good it is. I’m choosing the first cut off of it for today’s listening, Just Keep Me Movin.

Moving, give me motion
Grooving, I’m an ocean
Ooh (moving)
Feeling, getting higher
Feeling with desire
Just keep me moving
Ooh (moving)

Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
Free

Feeling, keep it coming
Rhythm, keep it pumping
Just keep me moving
Ooh (moving)

Moving, give me motion
Ooh (moving)

Freedom
Freedom
Freedom
Free

Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving

Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving
Just keep me moving

Just keep me moving

Songwriters: K. D. Lang / Benjamin Mink

He’s in his 80s now… Maybe he said all he had to say? I need to read all of his books again.
