Liebster Award Nominee! Yay!

Sadje has nominated me for a Liebster Award.  I don’t participate in these awards anymore, but because Sadje is such a supportive source of inspiration to me every day, how can I refuse.  Sadje, thank you for thinking of me  ❤  Please check out Sadje’s blog also, as she has poetry and wisdom galore there.

6. Notify your 11 nominees.

Sadje’s Questions to me:

Are you a serious blogger or just having fun here?
Both. I blog every day which makes it a habit, which makes it serious. I have fun while doing it and love the freedom to post whatever strikes my fancy. I like there to be a framework of structure, so I have chosen a series of regular stories or poem prompts that I participate in every week. I feel the blog is serious because it is helping develop my writing skills. I feel it is fun because of the blogging community and interacting with wonderful other bloggers.

What was the reason that made you start a blog?
Writing is something enjoyable and a way to express feelings, which is something I struggle with doing appropriately in other settings. As I started to get familiar with the blogging community, I realized it is also a great way to socialize – and LEARN! I’ve learned and am continuing to learn so much about music and poetry from other bloggers. It’s astounding how much knowledge, wisdom, and talent is here to draw from and enjoy.

Take a while to think and let us know: what object that is in your reach right now, influences you?
The biggest object that influences me right now is HEAT for the winter. I’ve decided not to burn wood this winter for the first time since 2011. Figuring out how to close off parts of the house and heat with electricity – each room has a thermostat that controls the registers – while keeping all of my plants alive is going to be a challenge. I’m looking at “heat blasters” for the atrium that won’t cost a fortune. I’ve had the heat on mostly at night over the past couple of weeks, and already my electric bill jumped $40.

How do you relax?
Writing, reading, listening to music, watching movies, gardening, brushing Mlady, playing board games, bicycling, conversations with friends/loved ones.

Are you superstitious?
Some. Knock on wood after saying something that could tempt fate, no going under ladders, things come in 3’s, black cat crossing path.

Loyalty to the one you love, or one who is right?
Depends on the circumstances.

How can we improve the environment of our planet? Do you take any practical steps towards it?
I can only speak for the US on this one. It is imperative that public transportation be widely available, clean, and safe as the first step. Once that is in place, make owning a motor vehicle so cost-prohibitive that nobody can afford it. Convert half of all existing roads into bicycle or pedestrian use only. Mandatory recycling. Convert all toxic plastics into coming from biodegradable sources like hemp, paper, etc. STOP FRACKING NOW. Mandate all energy sources be sustainable/renewable, no more “just reduce a little over a long period of time.” Make animal products so expensive that people turn more to fruits, vegetables, and grains, which will make everyone healthier, especially the animals being factory-farmed.

My practical steps include recycling, which I’ve been doing for at least 30 years; composting, which I’ve done for over 40 years, avoiding plastic whenever possible, using paper instead of plastic bags at the grocery store much of the time (I need the bags now for kitty litter disposal), eating no beef or pork and little chicken or fish, rarely soft drinks in plastic, avoid plastic straws.

What is one habit you have that you or your family think is childish?
Depends on which part of my family. If it’s my kids, they think my insistence on them cleaning up their plates and empties before they leave is childish/petty, but they do it. Most of the rest of my family think my staying away from my mom is childish as she is getting up in years and so should be given a “pass” on anything mean, stupid, or manipulative that she does.

Now my questions, which, instead of nominating people to answer, I’m opening up to anyone who chooses to answer one or all or some of them and put them in the comments section if you don’t want to do “the full Liebster” :
  1. Name one of your top 5 musical artists and what makes you love them?
  2. What’s your favorite flower and why?
  3. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you take with you?
  4. Morning person or night owl?
  5. If you could meet one famous person – from any time – who would it be, and what would you like to ask them?
  6. What’s your favorite poem – please include a link to it – and why?
  7. What is one of your most embarrassing moments?
  8. Do you consider yourself to be an ethical person? Why or why not?
  9. Who is your favorite family member? (Ties are acceptable)
  10. If you had to choose between giving birth to quintuplets or adopting one child, which one would you choose?
  11. What’s your favorite holiday and why?

  1. Congrats to you!! Well-deserved!
Nice to find other environmentalists on here. Recycling is an obsession with me and my most meaningful work experiences were working for a conservation authority (a Canadian thing- think of as a water regulating body and regional park organizer) although there was far too much managerial BS and difference between stated goals and what they did to make me altogether satisfied there.
I’d like to see US give railroads a tax break (after all they pay for their “roadways” including policing, we all pay for the roads used by trucks) since they’re more efficient for distance transport, and put a tax on gas that would be used for a mix of environmental projects and health care (since traffic accidents and pollution add to the cost of that considerably). Of course, few voters would go for it… but perhaps it could start at about 5-10 cents a gallon… even that would add up and wouldn’t break too many banks.

    1. Thanks Dave 🙂 Excellent ideas you have there. Doesn’t it always seem like things die in committee because those committees are full of politicians? I’m sick of the whole system. When are we going to acknowledge it hasn’t worked as intended for a long time — if ever!

  2. Congratulations! Keep up the good work! Very thoughtful answers.. I don’t think any of your answers surprised me. I will answer one of your questions right now- Favorite Holiday- Thanksgiving.. because its always near by birthday- which when I was younger was a big deal- and because it seems like a less stressful holiday than Christmas is.

    1. Thanks for your comments, Hans. I used to love Tgiving as my mom used to make a huge dinner (we’d bring our usual dish to pass), but when she stopped things changed. I still get together with my kids and their significant others but no grandkids and they are 100% vegetarian so no turkey. Halloween is my favorite now because there is no fuss-no muss. I truly do despise Christmas for what it has become 😦

      1. When I think of Thanksgiving I think of when I was younger and my grandparents were alive- going to their house- those were great days. When you grow up- your viewpoint on things can change.
