Born deep
Root of roots
Snuggling close
Waiting for warm, until
My green and purple spears
Pierce the sky
Lanky legs
Ferny arms
Swelling buds
Hot June’s charms
Fill me to bursting
Blossoming joy
Taste my ginger crack pollen!
All hit my pipe
Humming and staggering
Donating parts to
Boardrooms
And hospital vases
Painters love me
As do poets,
Singing my praises
Swaying in the breeze
Capturing rain droplets
Long summer afternoons
Fall’s petaled snow
Portends cool weather’s
Yellowing limbs
Dried stalks hold my place
As I go underground again
Dreaming of June
Linda Lee Lyberg is today’s host of dVerse. Linda says:
So today fellow poets, I would like you to think about what flower you most identify with or is your favorite (I know that will be hard!) and write a poem from the perspective of that flower. Some questions to think about: How did the flower begin? What has it seen? How does it feel to be a flower? Where did it end?

I love peonies but I never had any success with them in my garden. Maybe the roots disliked the soil

They need full sun and hot weather to thrive. If they don’t have them, they will bush out but not bloom.

Gorgeous Lisa! I have never tried growing peonies but I love them.

:) Thanks. I have a deep love for peonies, through every season.

Passionate peonies–who knew? I like the short lines with your tercets. Peonies don’t fare very well here in WA state, more a hot house plant.

Thank you, Glenn. They do ok in Michigan, but they must have full sun all day or forget about it.

My bad eyes first saw the picture as water lilies and I read and was confused, for I read of peonies, didn’t need a photo.I read right. You totally describe a peony’s life through its seasons.

So glad you are familiar with their life cycle through the seasons. I chose a blurry picture and should have chosen one more clear to show them off :)

Another gorgeous flower, one my grandfather grew in his tiny garden, where I gathered petals that dropped onto the grass. You’ve captured the emergence of their green and purple spears beautifully, Jade. My favourite lines:
‘Taste my ginger crack pollen!
All hit my pipe
Humming and staggering’.

Very cool on your grandfather growing them and you gathering their petals. Glad you enjoyed the poem, Kim.

“…spears
Pierce…”
is an absolutely brilliant juxtaposition of words, in a poem full of subtly brilliant word combinations.
