#MM — Music Challenges — “The Air that I Breathe,” by The Hollies

Jim Adams is the host of Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie’s Music Challenges.  Jim says:
The challenge today is to focus on [Quicksilver Messenger Service’s, “Fresh Air”] and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.

When I listen to this song, I think of breathing and of love and the old saying that one can “take one’s breath away” at the startling effect that person has when either regarding them or thinking of them or a memory in connection with them. The way the singer stops suddenly on the word “hit” mimics that sharp intake of breath that paralyzes a person with a pleasant sensation that stops mindful thought beyond the consuming nature of the sight or memory. It has the effect of suspending time.

When I think of other songs that convey breath and love as ecstatic companions, I think of The Hollies song, “The Air that I Breathe.” When I allow my mind to wander to such a place, I feel the truth of it in my bones.

Per wikipedia:

The Air That I Breathe” is a ballad written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood, initially recorded by Albert Hammond on his 1972 album It Never Rains in Southern California.

This song was a major hit for The Hollies in early 1974, reaching number two in the United Kingdom. In the summer of 1974, it reached number six in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number three on the Adult Contemporary chart. In Canada, the song peaked at number five on the RPM magazine charts. The audio engineering for “The Air That I Breathe” was done by Alan Parsons. In an interview, Parsons noted that Eric Clapton once said that the first note of “The Air That I Breathe” had more soul than anything he’d ever heard.

If I could make a wish
I think I’d pass
Can’t think of anything I need
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound
Nothing to eat, no books to read
Making love with you
Has left me peaceful warm and tired
What more could I ask
There’s nothing left to be desired
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel go to sleep

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe

Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel go to sleep

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
Songwriters: Albert Hammond / Mike Hazelwood

Glad you like the write-up, Jim. The music is lovely, the lyrics exquisite poetry, and their harmonies peerless. I need to learn more about The Hollies if they put out that many albums!

Did you know Graham Nash started out in the Hollies?

Glad they got you singing, K. Yes, I knew Graham was with them before, and it surprises me how good they sound without him here, as he has that harmony voice that I thought was essential to the Hollies sound.

My grandparents lived at the bottom of a hill, and the people up the hill had a tire swing. We had a lot of fun on that swing. I remember being wound up on that thing and having a blast on it.

Oh that is so very cool. Humans NEED each other. Isn’t just a preference. The human connection is everything. I’m on for a game of Talisman with my kids tomorrow at noon. We tried on Tuesday but Steam goes down for maintenance so it was a wash.

We are having a good time. He came down around 3 weeks back and I started to worry about it and he understood…we set this up and we are having a ball. You are right…we need it.
Steam is fun…Bailey had it for a while
