#MM Music Challenge — “Nothing Compares to U,” written by Prince, covered by Chris Cornell

New MM Music Badge

Jim Adams is the music-loving host of Mindlovemisery Menagerie’s Music Challenge.  Jim says:
The challenge today is to focus on [The Breakup Song by the Greg Kihn Band] and use it for a short story, a piece of flash fiction, or a poem that you can share with the WordPress writing community.

When I think of breakup songs probably at the top of my list is “Nothing Compares to U.” Although Sinead O’Connor is the one who made the song popular, it was written by Prince and is on his 1985 album, “The Family.” Prince’s original 1984 studio recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U” was not officially released until 2018, when it was issued as a single by Warner Bros. Records in conjunction with his estate.

Don’t get me wrong, I love both Prince’s original recording and Sinead’s cover, but it is Chris Cornell’s cover that gets me every time. The third anniversary of Chris’ death by suicide was on May 18. Has it really been three years?

When you’ve been with a person for any length of time, you share not only your bodies and selves with each other in intimate ways, you create new memories together that anchor the relationship in your psyche. The memories are interwoven into your being. When you lose someone, it is like losing a psychic limb. The ghost limb may end up shadowing you forever.

Just listened to it and I can see why it would. Bob has a way with words that get to the heart of the matter doesn’t he. Thanks, Joe
