Every atom gets its chance to be every thing.
When the Chinese call it the 10,000 things, I thought it was just an expression to encompass all, no matter how many. What I know now is that the term is talking about opportunity rather than quantity. In the beginning, when atoms were trying to figure out how every one could get a chance to be every thing, they had to develop a system where they could be endlessly recycled into a finite set of forms.
How is it that out of all of the zillions of atoms that comprise the known universe, many of them common out there, beyond the bounds of our atmosphere, we have a closed system? The sun acts as a giant battery, and the planets and satellites in our solar system hold us spinning pretty much in place.
Did the atoms come up with this plan? Or are we like a cosmic snow globe that was constructed to be shaken once in awhile for the entertainment of our makers? Did our makers set up betting sheets to see how long we would last? Or are we just one maker’s science project? Will we win them a prize? Or will we be an embarrassment that ends us up in an interstellar landfill.

Brendan is today’s host of earthweal‘s weekly challenge. Brendan wants us to write on gifts. Just before I read Brendan’s wonderful, illuminating essay on strawberries, a gift of an idea came to me. No idea where it came from but like Brendan becoming reacquainted with trees, the idea felt so familiar but different this time.

For the most part, I don’t have a theory, other than it makes somewhat more sense to me that there is a supernatural force that created the world than that there was a big bang. But – why did this force create the world? I have no way of knowing that.
