The sixth track on the first disc of The Brit Box is, “Just Like Heaven,” which was the third single released from The Cure’s album, “Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me,” their seventh studio album, released in May 1987.
Tidbits:
The song is about hyperventilating—kissing and fainting to the floor.
–Robert Smith
It was The Cure’s eleventh Top 40 hit in the UK but was their first American hit.
The group wrote most of the song during recording sessions in southern France in 1987. The lyrics were written by their front man Robert Smith, who drew inspiration from a past trip to the sea shore with his future wife. Smith’s memories of the trip formed the basis for the song’s accompanying music video. Before Smith had completed the lyrics, an instrumental version of the song was used as the theme for the French television show Les Enfants du Rock.
On 16 July 2006, “Just Like Heaven” was played as a wake-up call for the crew of Space Shuttle Discovery on their flight STS-121 at the request of astronaut Piers Sellers’ family; Sellers told mission control center that the song reminded him of “the wild, happy, beer-drinking years of my youth.”
“Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream” she said
“The one that makes me laugh” she said
And threw her arms around my neck
Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I’ll run away with you
I’ll run away with you
Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
Why are you so far away, she said
Why won’t you ever know that I’m in love with you
That I’m in love with you
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You’re just like a dream
You’re just like a dream
Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone, alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me
You
Soft and lonely
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven

Yep, it was this song and this album that really made me BIG fan of the Cure. I knew a fair bit of their stuff before that, and liked some of it quite well but after weeks of radio play, I got that CD and man, it was good. I remember playing it to death that summer, the first one when I had moved out of my mom’s place.

Never really got much into The Cure, though I like some their songs. I think my favorite is “Friday I’m in Love.”

Finally I song I know 😀. Really enjoyed this one. I always liked Robert Smith hair – that I just got out of bed and don’t care what my hair looks like. Although I’m sure he spent hours making it looking that way
