TSM 189 — Nature Girl

Nature Girl

Mama yells, “don’t get your frock dirty,” as
she skips away to play among wren tinkles
and sunbeams through tall stands of pine.

Bursting from the dappled path, she glimpses
where silver ripples the mere speck of a lake;
a dancing gingham butterfly flits as flowers sway.

Casting off her cap and all the rest, she tip-toes
amongst the pretty-colored stones and laughs
before diving curl-first into cool deep yellow green.

***

Howl echoes wake her on the sunset shore.
Dusk-chilled, she shivers as she worries through
standing and slinking silhouettes, towards home.

Indeed! I wanted to include she’s worried not about the silhouettes but about what Mama is going to say about her being out so late but didn’t have the oomph/energy to do it. Maybe will polish this one later.

Love the playing up of danger shown here Jade! It is often the case when one is carried away in playing in the woods and forget about things.

Ooie, ooa, Momma’s going to scold.
Kids here plow into the colored fallen fall leaves.
I loved to play outside and down by the creek on cool fall days.

I love your comment, and yes she is :) I was outside and near the water always as a kid. I spent much of my childhood at my grandparents’ house and they lived by a marsh and a creek. My folks also took us to the lakes a lot.

You really should have been a songwriter…”before diving curl-first into cool deep yellow green.”…that is a great line.

You could do it…with some psychedelic lines like this…it would be cool.

I love the musical overtones and the vivid colors and images here–gingham butterflies! You really conveyed this story with great immediacy, enough to remind me of all the wild playtime I was allowed as a child, to wander wherever I wanted, something today’s children probably do not enjoy, and how there were scares as well as fun there. Loved this. Sorry to be so late to the party, Li–my booster shot left me pretty bedraggled for few days.

Joy, so glad you enjoyed it and it took you where you did. I fear you are right about today’s kids not knowing how to play because they’re distracted with electronica.

Am sorry to hear the booster took it out of you. I haven’t gotten my booster yet. Seems like there are a lot more ill effects after it than there were with the first one(s).
