Last year I started following a facebook group, “Big Trees Michigan.” It was there that I learned about the sequoia trees living in Manistee. About a month ago, someone posted a picture of a Dawn Redwood tree living in Michigan and again was flabbergasted. As if that wasn’t enough, the mother of a friend, who is also now a friend, said that her neighbor has a Dawn Redwood in her yard! Not only that, but she has gathered seeds from it – and offered to share some with me! Can you feel the tingle of miracles building on miracles?
She mailed the seeds to me last week, and I finally got them planted on Sunday. We’ve been staying in communication on facebook. She planted her seeds a week before me. Yesterday she found two of them had sprouted. It was supposed to take thirty to forty days! I can’t wait to see mine sprout. Will update this post as things happen.
The Dawn Redwood was once thought to be extinct. Only fossils remained as evidence. Until someone found them still living. Read more about this exciting story here.

The following is one of many videos on this species of tree that you can find on YouTube.
Go here to see the article I first saw in Big Trees Michigan facebook group.
2/1/23 update: The trays are supposed to be kept in complete dark until the seeds sprout. Since my friend had a couple sprout after only a week, even though it’s supposed to take 30-40 days, I started checking the trays after a week. I planted them on the 22nd and started looking on the 29th. Today I looked and there is one sprouted! I took the tray it is in out and put it in a zip lock bag near the heat and now need to find my plant light. Things just got real. YES!
This is amazing. I hope your tree grows and prospers.

I’ve got about 70 seeds planted. Hoping at least one does. Will be doing updates. Thanks, Sadje 🙂

It’s kind of amazing that envelope (and said contents) got to you, by the looks of it.

I had a dream last night that they were growing in a lush grass-like way out of the trays 🙂

Keep your fingers crossed for the seeds. The seed starter I got was bad and that may be their doom. We’ll see. Yes, I see that they will have to be planted in some open spaces!

Well hopefully most of them will be good…yep fingers crossed.

Redwood trees are so much associated with Northern California that you really wouldn’t think they grow in Michigan. Keeping fingers crossed something will sprout. Who knows, all for a sudden you may find yourself with a forest in your garden! 🙂

🙂 Christian, I was thinking that same thing. They are fast growers, so I need to be prepared. Yes, it is amazing they live in MI just like the sequoia!

It never gets old. My youngest keeps planting seeds from everything she eats. So far, some have fared better than others. But she did give me a baby lemon tree to replace the one I had that died. It’s about 6″ high now.

So wonderful about your daughter and her growing. So sorry to hear about the lemon tree. Citrus really don’t like the northern cold. Happy you have a baby one. Life goes on.

It lived a long life–almost 30 years! So I can’t really complain. That’s a long time for a tree to live in a pot.
