houseplant in bloom 032623 (2)

This houseplant that my older son gave me years ago has managed to stay alive, but it has never bloomed before.  I put it close to the plant light that’s shining on the dawn redwood seedlings and it has been inspired to bloom.  It’s still opening, but what a beauty.

This weekend has been busy in many ways but deadlines are getting met and it lessens the pressure each time.

I had a chance to see both sons, my DIL, and my baby granddaughter who will be two years old real soon.  She keeps them hopping, and I was hopping with them yesterday.

Last Sunday, I was very surprised to see a deer out in the sunshine browsing on new grass out back.

Lastly, I started watching a new series on Netflix, called, “Atypical.”  It is a very good show about a family of Father, Mother, Son, and Daughter.  Father is an EMT and played by Michael Rappaport; Mother is a housewife and played by Jennifer Jason Leigh.  The son, Sam, played by Keir Gilchrist, was diagnosed young with Aspergers, which is an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Sam is now in high school and navigating all of the things any high schooler navigates, except Sam’s diagnosis makes everything that much more complicated.  Sam is lucky to have his sister, Casey, played by Brigette Lundy-Paine, also attending high school, as she does not suffer fools lightly.  Unlike so many family shows, this one is more kind-hearted.  It’s still a comedy and there are a few wisecrackers, namely a very funny kid, Zahid, played by Nik Dodani, that Sam works with at the computer tech shop.  The relationships between each parent and each of their children, between the parents, between the siblings, and between Sam and his therapist, Julia, played by Amy Okuda, is very pleasant to watch.  If you are on “the spectrum,”  know and love someone on it, or simply would like to learn more about how those with Asperger’s perceive the world, I would highly recommend this series.  One last word about it:  although it hasn’t been mentioned in the first couple of episodes yet,  a new term is “neurodivergent,” which is part of the neurodiversity movement.

Yes, it is, and the sun is even shining out there today — and not off of the snow 🙂

  2. Hoping to catch this. I was diagnosed with Aspergers at 50 years old! At the time, the doctor says there was nothing he could teach me … but that I could probably teach them tons! LOL That was 14 years ago and although the diagnosis didn’t change anything, it finally explained everything! 🙃

That’s pretty neat that your plant decided to bloom! Nice to get with family, isn’t it. My daughter, SIL & grandson were here this past week. It had been so very long since we’d seen them. It was wonderful!
The TV show sounds really good. 🙂

I love that your plant “felt the pressure” to perform when put against one doing so well.
I’ve not looked into Atypical yet…. I very much adored Extraordinary Attorney Woo – somehow didn’t mind reading the show!

  5. Glad you got to spend some time with your family. That Netflix series does look intriguing and possibly groundbreaking. I never heard of a series where the protagonist is an individual with high functioning autism. I bet there are many folks out there who believe your “typical person with autism” is like Dustin Hoffman in “Rain Man”, so a series like “Atypical” could be pretty educational.

Thank you, Christian, it was. Not sure if you saw that my older son has moved back to this town from Grand Rapids? He’s not far from here and I’m one happy mother. I 100% agree with you on the show. It’s wonderful and educational.

No worries on reading, Max. It was SO nice to be able to drive just down the street instead of 50 miles away. We had a good time.

It’s wonderful to hear that your houseplant has finally bloomed after all these years! It’s amazing what a little bit of inspiration can do, and it sounds like the plant light really did the trick. I also enjoyed hearing about your weekend with your family, especially your baby granddaughter who sounds like she keeps everyone on their toes. And thanks for the recommendation about the show “Atypical” on Netflix – it sounds like a really heartwarming and insightful series that explores a topic that’s not often covered in mainstream media. It’s great to see more representation of neurodivergent individuals and their experiences, and I’ll definitely have to check it out. Thanks for sharing your updates and insights with us!

You are very welcome. There are 4 seasons of “Atypical” and I’m almost done with S3. It just keeps getting better and better. A wonderful teaching show with a genuinely kind heart.
