Genuinely Refreshing Horchata! (with new pic)

horchata 080323I made another batch of horchata today and decided to take a pic with my glam mug.

I have nabbed a zillion recipes from Irene at My Slice of Mexico and would like to thank her yet again for how many good things I’ve made over the years from them.  Today I want to talk about her horchata recipe.  It is SO EASY to make and it is SO DELICIOUS to drink.  Not only that it is genuinely refreshing.  It’s mostly rice milk with a slight sweetness and cinnamon infusion.  If you make it, let me know what you think of it.  If you’ve made your own horchata or have drank it elsewhere before, please say what you think of it.  I’m always happy to find restaurants that offer it.

Of course, while looking for a picture I came across some more info on horchata beyond the recipe, at wikipedia.  Go there and you’ll find some interesting info on it.

Last but not least, while further moseying out in cyberia, I came across this entertaining video that I hope you get a chuckle out of:

Too funny. As soon as I read the title, I thought of Vampire Weekend.

I really should try making the stuff…

It said, “video unavailable” :( It is SO easy. Bring 1 c of water to boil with a cinnamon stick in it. dissolve 1 TBL of sugar in it. Once at room temp remove cinnamon stick and add 4 c of rice milk. Pour over ice. YUM

Between you and Bailey it should be easy to make. And you can surprise Jen when she gets home with a glass of it :)

Yes speaking of Jen…it could be a month…her mom is sick and she is supposed to get operated on tomorrow…I doubt if they do with her sick.
I would be more than willing to try it! The picture looked so good.

So sorry to hear about Jen’s mom. I hope they don’t risk it if she’s sick. Bad enough if she isn’t.

  6. Horchata is a winner. I’m also a fan of fruit waters. Jamaica (hibiscus) and tamarindo (tamarind) are among my favorites. I once went into a local Mexican restaurant and ordered what I thought (from the price) would be a glass – it was a whole pitcher. That, and the fact that no one 9customer or staff) in the place spoke English, made me realize I’d found some authenticity here in the midwest. Alas, the place didn’t last long.

A friend of mine bought me what was a fruit water pitcher, with a removable cylinder in the center. I don’t think I ever used it for that and now can’t remember what happened to it :(

p.s. I’ve seen bottles of those flavors in the Mexican food aisle at the store. Have you ever tried Coco de Bebida? With little pieces of coconut in it? That stuff is addictive!

      1. Haven’t tried it. There is pop in those flavors by Jarritos, sweeter and carbonated, so not the same as aqua fresca (fruit water), but still tasty.

It sounds delicious and the best part is it’s easy to make. I’ll have to try this. But the video made me go ‘yuck’ 😃…seeing him swimming in a pool of horchata and drinking from it, too.
