My family at Meijer Gardens yesterday. I am threatened with great harm if I show any more detail of them than this. You can see just the edge of my granddaughter between younger son and his wife.

Last but not least, some of you have heard me say that my cat, Dotty, has an exercise wheel.  She ran on one at the shelter I adopted her from so I bought her one.  She’s mostly used it to sharpen her claws on (the foam rubber pad that lines the inside of the wheel.) Lately she has started using it a lot.

The salsa has got a little kick and is quite tasty. Yes, she’s a smart cat, one of the few I have seen walking on the wheel.

      1. I doubt any of my cats would bother with it.🤣

I knew she walked on the wheel at the shelter before I bought it. Mlady has no interest in it and probably just shakes her head at Dotty :)

Your garden goodies look great! Pretty flowers, and your kitty is so cute walking on the wheel . I’d never knew there were such things. :)

Barbara, I didn’t know about the wheel either until I saw it at the cat shelter and started looking for one. Thank you on the pics and so many things still in bloom. Most fertile summer I’ve ever seen.

  4. I inherited my mom’s canning jars and occasionally feel guilty that I haven’t canned in so long. I get over it and use the jars for other things.

It’s nice to know they are there, if the canning urge hits. I’ve got another batch of tomatoes and peppers on the counter waiting for something. I may just do stewed tomatoes.

I need to do what Dotty is doing more! I still haven’t tried Dragon Fruit but I’ve always wanted to…if I have I don’t remember but I would remember that. Looks like your garden did great this year.

Max, I’ve never seen the strawberries so prolific. I did fertilize them with osmocote — highly recommended! — in the spring. Went out and picked another bowl of them today, brought them in and made a delicious smoothie with them, rice milk, ice, a little carrot ginger juice, and a couple of spoons of orange metamucil. Oh was it delicious! I don’t know if the dragon fruit just wasn’t ripe or they just aren’t very sweet. The consistency was very good, softer than an apple but firmer than a kiwifruit.

I completely missed this comment somehow.
I never heard of osmocote…I’ll tell the boss here. I’ve seen pics of dragonfruit but I don’t think I’ve tried it. I want to get one…I want to go to the farmers market soon…I’ll try there.

Osmocote is time released fertilizer. Every time it rains it releases some. Not sure if you’ll find dragon fruit at the market but maybe!

  6. I’m glad to see last week wasn’t all a loss. First of all, that haul of zucchinis, tomatoes and strawberries from your garden truly looks impressive – I think my dear wife Frances might get a bit jealous if she saw it! :-)

And, oh my gosh, your Dotty looks a little like she could be related to one of our cat ladies, Misty. In case you wonder that’s a name my son came up with when we took her in as a feral kitten some 10 years ago, along with her four siblings (three males and one female) after Animal Control unfortunately had captured and most certainly killed their parents.

In East Brunswick (NJ) that’s just the way things go. If you’re a feral cat you might as well not show up on the street, less you want to draw the heat…

I’m cleaning carpets today but it’s cool enough to have the windows open through the house to keep the air circulating. Hoping to get this latest batch of tomatoes and peppers canned tomorrow or Tuesday.

Very cool about Dotty’s kindred spirit, Misty. Misty and her four sibs were blessed to be saved by you and Frances. We have a “kill shelter” here also, but we also have several rescues that take ferals in and try to get them adopted. Dotty and Mlady came from a no-kill shelter in Grand Rapids. There are feral cat rescues that capture, spay/neuter, and release in GR. They notch a corner of their ears so rescuers know the fixed from the unfixed. It’s a system that seems to work afaik. The fixed ferals hold the cat territories and in the long run less unfixed ferals running around.

    That salsa looks absolutely divine!
My garden did not produce sufficiently for me to be able to make anything interesting… I’ll have to go to the market to buy my stuff!

There was just enough in the bottom of the pan to get a taste and ooh yes it is good, with a slow build to the moderate heat. If you buy from the market and make something it’s just as good even if it costs a wee bit more. There is always next year’s garden, Dear Dale.

Nice! Oh, I always go to the market. I was just hoping to have a little more stuff from mine. I’ve enjoyed a few bits here and there but nothing will be canned. All good, though. I’ve enjoyed what I have had so far.

I never heard of a cat exercise wheel. An intriguing idea. (K)

The heat has been oppressive but oh it makes things grow if they are watered. Dotty loves that wheel, both to sharpen her claws (the one at the shelter had just vinyl pattern on the run surface, this had foam rubber and is a bad design, but she loves it) and to walk it and sometimes even full out run.

As a child we had hamsters who loved their wheels also. It always feels good to get the blood flowing I think.
