Friday Favorite Feature 8 — tiramisu

Trying to choose a favorite dessert for me is an exercise in futility as there are so many contenders. Today I choose tiramisu as the subject of my Friday Favorite Feature.

Wikipedia describes Tiramisu as:

Tiramisu (Italian: tiramisù [ˌtiramiˈsu], from tirami su, “pick me up” or “cheer me up”) is a coffee-flavoured Italian dessert. It is made of ladyfingers (savoiardi) dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar and mascarpone, flavoured with cocoa. The recipe has been adapted into many varieties of cakes and other desserts. Its origin is disputed between the Italian regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

I’ve prepared tiramisu as a dessert for special occasions and it’s relatively easy to make. I’ve had to substitute slices of pound cake for the ladyfingers as they just don’t sell them around here and I’m not going to make them from scratch.

The combination of the flavors of coffee, mascarpone cream, alcohol, and cocoa, as well as the chilled creamy texture of it all makes it as close to perfect as perfect can get.

Have you eaten tiramisu before? Do you like it?

What’s your favorite dessert (for today)?

  1. I have a partial bottle of Marsala from when I made tiramisu some years ago. Maybe I’ll have to make it again to use up the wine. I did make ladyfingers – not that hard but it does make it rather time-consuming. I had enough ladyfingers to not use the ones that were too badly misshapen. It was for a special occasion.

A former boss had a favorite dessert I made. She allowed alcohol into the workplace for this. It was a pumpkin-pecan pie (pumpkin pie layer with the pecan pie filling floated on top) with bourbon custard sauce. Since the bourbon was added after cooking the custard, it was still alcoholic. She insisted I bring it to every winter potluck.

My next winter pie will be butternut bourbon cream pie. It is described like this: “If pumpkin pie slipped on a silky ballgown, this dessert would be the result: a voluptuous golden custard nestled inside a nutty, cookie-like crust with a hint of spice, topped with Bourbon whipped cream and cinnamon-butter toasted pumpkin seeds.” We’ll see if it lives up to that hype.

OMG both of those sound SO good. I wish I could snap my fingers and both of them would appear.

I like tiramisu but I have to admit to being partial to cheesecake with graham cracker crust. Although key lime pie…well who can pick just one? (K)

Oh I love Baklava. There is a greek restaurant that has a drive-through here. Every time I go there I ask if they have any. A lot of times they are out. Oh my goodness didn’t know you don’t like coffee. What do you drink in the day?

I drink water, tea, and Gatorade Zero. The old me would say pop and tea with real sugar…. around two years ago I gave up drinking sugar.

Is it because of your kidney stones? Sugar, the white sands of death :(

No….my doctor told me how much sugar is in cokes, sweet tea (a southern must), and other drinks…so I did away with them. Now…if I pick up a coke…I can only drink a couple of drinks…too sweet.
I do drink Milo Tea…no real sugar though. That combined with walking at least 7000 steps a day has made me feel much better….sorry for the book!

I remember you mentioning giving up sweet tea before. Happy you gave up the sugary drinks. I use Tru Lemon packets in water and put it in herbal tea as well, a modified Arnold Palmer with no sugar. 7000 steps a day!? That’s fan*tas*tic, Max. I can feel your health from here :) And don’t apologize for writing — ever!

Ok thanks…but I just went to the doctor and everything looks good…so now I’m looking for a treadmill at home. Last year I did this…losing weight but when it got too cold…I stayed indoors…so it’s time to keep this going. I’m checking Marketplace on facebook.

We do have tiramisu here but we use coffee to moisten it. No alcohol. It’s nice but a bit too much coffee can make it a no-no for me

Sadje, I think what I use in my recipe is a coffee liqueur (sp?) and not much of it, maybe a tablespoon or two.
