Jeremy was born deaf. As he became self-aware, he never felt deficient, just different. Machines helped him adapt to the mainstream. College lead to a seamless transition to the world of work.
Jeremy lived in a rural area and worked from home. One night he was about to shut the back blinds when he saw lights approaching over the field. They stopped when they reached the edge of the lawn and hovered for a few minutes before disappearing. For seven nights it was the same routine. On the eighth, a voice in his head said, “We come in peace.”

Oh, cool! They sussed him out and discovered he was deaf, so they communicated silently? What a great idea!

Thanks, Someone. Not sure why he was chosen but maybe their instruments showed he couldn’t hear but was telepathic?

My first thought was “UFO”, but I obviously went a different direction. So they can speak to the deaf – nice little detail.

Those are the kind of visitors we can use–can they create peace too? (K)

I think they can.

Somehow stating you come in peace does not encourage me. Then again, we can hope they really do and have chosen wisely.

I guess we’re not alone after all. Let’s hope these ETs are smarter than many human beings!

I’m glad they chose him to communicate with him…they probably sensed a self sufficient soul.

Cool, you don’t need to hear if we can communicate telepathically.

YES! If they are going to step in, now would be a good time. (You are showing up as “Someone”)

Interesting story. We do know that an absence of one sense heightens other so this makes perfect sense to me.

Mysterious, why pick on Jeremy; have they cured his deafness?

James, I don’t think they are picking on Jeremy as much as they have picked/chosen him as their intermediary because he can understand their telepathic language. And yes, in a way, they have cured his deafness as he can hear them. Thanks for that perspective :)

Jeremy’s about to begin a very different sort of life, I think. I like the idea of allowing a deaf person to be the one to ‘hear’ the alien voices. Well told.

That’s very cool. They understood he couldn’t hear and communicated a different way. Ah aliens!

As I was reading this, I wondered, “what would a story about a person born hearing in a world where all others are deaf”?
If you come in peace you are in the wrong place. :-)
Well done, Lisa.

Colonizers always come in peace and speak telepathically to deaf people. All right, maybe not always. Maybe these visitors are just different. I get it.

I hadn’t thought of the visitors being different than the usual ones, but heck yes. They are the up-to-now hands-off overseers of this little earthly experiment that have decided to step in.
