Friday Favorite Feature 9 — Daddy’z Breakdown

The first/only time I heard Daddy’z Breakdown was in 2010, at a little bar in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where we had gone to see another band (Dutch Henry) in the lineup. They had just released their eponymous debut (and only, to date) album and were selling them at the show. I was so blown away by how good they were of course I bought the album.

All songs are written by Michael Seibert, who is also lead vocal and plays rhythm guitar. Jim Patnoude is on lead guitar, John Becker is on bass, and Scott Deloof is on drums.

Reverb Nation says:
Boomer Rock inspired by the “Greats” of the Classic Rock Generation. Foot tapping, high energy melodies with good old tube driven guitars.

The Daddy’z Breakdown experience exposes you to a sonic blend of Classic Rock, Rockabilly, Country, Blues, and Americana music. This music is the answer to the Classic Rock fan looking for new artists with a fresh sound. We like to call it Boomer Rock, so if you are a Baby Boomer looking for that occasional break from talk radio, give the Daddy’z Breakdown experience a try. Some listeners have reported a positive tonal reaction while engaging in prolonged activities such as driving, working, working out, house work, yard work, and of course socializing with friends of all generations.

Daddy’z Breakdown is a group of experienced musicians who have played clubs, concerts and recorded over the years. Our music is enjoyed by all ages especially the “Boomer ” generation.
As for the name Daddy’z Breakdown, Mikes’ kids thought he was crazy when he said he was putting a band together!

The CD has been sitting in the cabinet for quite awhile since I listened to it. Since the blu tooth keeps crapping out on me in the car, I can’t listen to Spotify in the car. “Regular” radio has become virtually unlistenable to me anymore, unless I flip it to an NPR station, and that seems to be filled with political analysis that has no interest for me. That means I’m reaching for my CDs to take along. I grabbed this one earlier in the week and have been playing it on repeat. All of the lyrics have come back to me like old friends.

The lyrics are all meaningful and well thought-out. Mike’s voice is higher pitched and well-suited for those heartbreak tunes and has a clarity to it that I truly love. Jim’s lead guitar is played with skill like Robbie Robertson and Nick Valensi from The Strokes, where he isn’t a hot dog and gives just the right amount of flourish needed. Becker’s bass isn’t background noise and lends a lot to many of the tunes. Deloof’s drums are decent.

It is difficult to pick favorites out of the 11-track lineup, but my 3 favorites are “It Breaks Me,” which is about a guy who loves his girlfriend but keeps catching her cheating. “Raincoat” is, on the surface, about a lost raincoat, but it’s what that raincoat represents that matters. “How Hot You Are” is probably the catchiest tune, and is sung by a member of a band who has become smitten with a woman who is on the dance floor.

I tried to find more current info on the band. All I could find is that they did at least one live performance in 2021. It’s a real shame this album didn’t get promoted like it should have. I really think these guys could have gone on to bigger things, at least regionally. I’ve included the one music video I could find and also included a Spotify teaser. All songs can be heard out on YouTube. Give them a listen if you get a chance and let me know what you think!

It’s amazing how, in this day of information overload, so many artists and musicians can just seemingly disappear. Sounds like good solid classic rock. Glad to know that they at least seem to still be performing. (K)

The guitarist plays for the song…I like that. It wasn’t about him…it was about the song. Sounds really good Lisa and it’s a shame that many bands are out there like this that are probably better than many who made it. I like how the guitars are interweaving with each other. Great find! His voice is really cool also.

Randy, I totally agree. TBH I look at this recording more as a demo tape and imagine it getting re-done with all of the bells and whistles. It’s a first class album.
