POPO2023 Day 26

26 Colette Dutton Seurat The Bridge at Courbevoie 1886 87Georges Seurat, “The Bridge at Courbevoie”

Ten witch hazel saplings arrived last spring.
They summered in pots without incident.
Transplanted in fall along the fence line.
In winter, they were nibbled by foraging deer.
This Spring, they lushed out in perfect green.
Since then, they’ve battled
tent caterpillars, more deer,
weed whackers (sorry!,) and drought.
They are battered
but still very much alive in the real.

One thing easy to see is that I didn’t get them tall enough or wide enough :( They came in metal coated squares about 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide, with zip ties to connect them and metal ground “U”s to keep them from blowing over/away. I had to use 2 for each one to go around and for the taller ones one over top. With the tomato cages on 3, I was able to protect 6 more. Three are still unprotected. Time to order more. Will show pics later.

They sell them small… not cool because they have to know that there are chances you will end up back getting new healthy ones.

Dale, I was talking about the the tree protectors not the trees, but I agree. They have to be tended in a certain way to survive when they are small.
