#SLS — Deep Cuts — “Win” by David Bowie

david bowie young americans

“Me, I’m fresh on your pages”

My choice of deep cut is, “Win” from David Bowie’s “Young American” album.  There is something that pulls me in about the lyrics.  I also love how David sings.  Luther Vandross is one of the backup singers.  It doesn’t get much better than this, peeps.

Me, I hope that I’m crazy
I feel you driving and you’re only the wheel
Slow down, let someone love you
Ohh, I’ve never touched you since I started to feel
If there’s nothing to hide me
Then you’ve never seen me hanging naked and wired
Somebody lied, but I say it’s hip
To be alive

Now your smile is spreading thin
Seems you’re trying not to lose
Since I’m not supposed to grin
All you’ve got to do is win

(That’s all ya gotta do)
(Ooh, it ain’t over)

Me, I’m fresh on your pages
Secret thinker sometimes listening aloud
Life lies dumb on its heroes
Wear your wound with honor, make someone proud
Someone like you should not be allowed
To start any fires

Now your smile is spreading thin
Seems you’re trying not to lose
Since I’m not supposed to grin
All you’ve got to do is win

(That’s all ya gotta do)
(Ohh, it ain’t over)

Written by David Bowie

I did a write up on this album a few years back, here.

Jim Adams is the music-appreciating host of Song Lyric Sunday.  Jim says:
This week the theme is to find a song that you feel is an underrated deep album cut suggested by Greg’s Blog.  Since I haven’t linked to SLS in awhile, not up on who and what Greg’s Blog is, so I’ll follow the first part but not the second.  Jim feel free to delete my post if it isn’t following the rules.

  1. I like the sound of “Win”, which I don’t recall hearing before. While I’ve listened to music spanning most of Bowie’s career, for the most part, that’s not the case when it comes to entire albums. From “Young Americans”, I only knew the title track, “Fame” and Bowie’s cover of “Across the Universe”.

I know Young Americans is considered a lesser album than others, I’ve listened to it just as much as the others I have and continue to think of “Win” up there towards the top of the heap for favorite Bowie songs, just like I consider “Hazel” from Planet Waves one of my favorite Dylan songs.

Glad you like Win. Some sources say Bowie wasn’t at the top of his game in voice d/t coke habits at the time, but honestly you have John Lennon singing backup on Across the Universe and Luther Vandross backup on the rest, how can you really go wrong.

I enjoyed listening to this. Wasn’t exactly the kind of song my head picks up quickly but gives me a chance to understand the variety. Thanks for sharing 👏

Honestly can’t remember the song but I know I’ve listened to the whole album many years ago. Giving it a listen now I hear why you like it. Great one Lisa!

  5. A great choice for a deep cut. Lisa. The lyrics describe a person who became very successful, but is still unhappy, so I think the title Win is contrary to the meaning.

Good interpretation of the song, Jim. I see it another way but that’s the beauty of music, lyrics, etc, that we each can see something we connect with.

A great choice. I played the two best known tracks from that album for SLS a few weeks back but I’d forgotten about this one. Thanks for reminding me!

To be honest I preferred his earlier stuff. I don’t think he ever did anything better than Ziggy Stardust!

With Bowie, his styles are cornucopia. Whatever you pick will be delicious. I love Ziggy Stardust, but I also love Hunky Dory.

Snap! And Aladdin Sane, The Man Who Sold The World, Diamond Dogs, Pin Ups. After that I didn’t enjoy them as much – just some tracks, not whole albums like before.

Max, my musical blogmate, did a post on “the sacred harp” yesterday. I think David’s voice qualifies as one.

Great song Lisa…I know this one. I love album cuts! It reminds me of what I was 16…that is when I heard it first.

Great age to hear it, especially with Young Americans on there. Perfect song for a 16 year-old.

I’m sure you love Across the Universe with John on that album also. Is that why you bought the album? I know every word of every song on the album. Used to be standard practice with albums, but nowadays with digital records and no physical presence I wonder if the young people still learn all of the words…

Oh I’m a Bowie fan…Hunky Dory is my favorite but I like a lot by him.
Oh Spotify has lyrics…but I still like albums…I thought it was cool that Vinyl outsold CD’s last year.

Max, I’m glad you said that singles are available on vinyl. I’ve been trying to think of a good present to get the grandbaby for Christmas. In the middle of the night a voice said, “get her a record player and some 45s” I’m 100% serious.

Yes…I mean unless there was something out there right now that you liked…I would go to a second hand record shop…that is what we do. We love them…the only thing I buy new is remixed versions like The White Album and Abbey Road…and of course this.
