Colleen Chesebro is the host of Tanka Tuesday.  Colleen says:
Compose a series of three tanka:
You must use one kigo phrase in each tanka as either the first line or the pivot line in each of your three tanka poems.

#1: “the first month with sleet”
#2: “late winter garden”
#3: “blanket by the fire”

This week’s challenge takes me out of synch with the 24 seasons kigo and using the 24 forms in order, and that’s ok.  That said, I tried 3 different times to write “the usual” type of tanka with these lines as they did not match up with what the season is doing here in West Michigan.  Today I came back to them with an open mind, and used their being “off kilter” to write darker-themed, connected tanka.

  3. Excellent! This is what I was looking for. Everyone wants to be so literal with what is happening in their locations. Thinking outside the box is so much more interesting! Well done, Lisa.

Thank you, Colleen. If I’m being honest, I would have preferred to stay in the box ;) That said, it did push me outside of my comfort zone.

Thank you, Max. I don’t like to let myself go there often. Yes, that song keeps reminding us but we don’t seem to want to listen :(

    One of my favorite songs.
The weather is, indeed, bonkers–as nature continues to suffer from the degradations of humanity. Well done Jade. (K)

  9. We’re in the process of ruining the planet, and all will pay for the recklessness, including mankind. The last stanza and photo are absolutely heartbreaking. Thank you for the poem and for the plea.

Dark is the season… dark is the prediction that even humans will become extinct. We hope for spring even before winter becomes official.

Dark is a reminder that light can exist too. May the light in our hearts beam a good hope and renewal.

David already stole mine, but I love this! That picture of the polar bear made me cry. It is heartbreaking.
