November’s Hourglasses
donning hoody and
quilted vest, she makes her way
out to the mailbox.
a pale, weak sun washes cold;
no relief from wind,
no warmth found between junk mail.
in disappointment
she turns. her steps scuff gravel
gray path of the forgotten
across the globe,
on her deathbed, a woman
mourns there’s no more time
to mend her wrongs, say goodbye;
to ask mother’s forgiveness
kigo: hoody and vest weather, weak sun
choka form with a tanka envoi

That was the most moving thing I’ve read in a long time. It’s rare a poem brings me to tears, however yours just did. I guess… thank you? Yes, thank you.

Thank you very much, Paul. At first I was the one walking to the mailbox, but while writing the tanka I flipped the script. It felt right then.

Choices… reminds me of a loved one who died without family around. Sad. But not much you can do.
