Fallen Comrade

Out on an errand yesterday, I took time to stop and take some pics of the giant tree that got cut down.  As evidenced by my feet and legs, you can see its girth.  I walked across and it was 6+ feet from side to side.

Here are the other shots I took of it and its dismembered pieces.  From what I saw of the trunk and the limbs there was no disease present.  It deepens the mystery of why this beauty was taken from the world of the living.

Still, fallen comrade
your stories’ pages will turn
curling smoke and ash

Here are some other pics I took while out and about:

  1. Removing a tree of that mighty size is a significant and costly job. One would hope there was a good reason for it.

Depends on who is paying for it, I guess, as to how costly.

Driving by it again and again is tough. To see it was perfectly healthy is tougher :(

I see no rot or anything…looks like a good sturdy tree. I hope there was a legit reason.

I may just write them a letter. Face to face might be a little too confronting for them — and me!

If a tree is about to fall on your house or rotting with disease I get it…but other than that…no

How sad such a mighty and beautiful tree was taken down without a valid reason. Beautiful photos, Li.

Oh, I can imagine. Where I live, trees are in abundance, thus the reason we love it here.

Eugi, in Michigan we have a lot of trees, just not a lot of BIG trees :(

My father was born in Michigan and I spent a lot of time there with relatives. I remember a lot of trees and farms. I live in Georgia and love the trees, which line the streets in downtown areas.

So you know what the tree situation is here, cool. I have never been to Georgia before.

I moved from Florida to Georgia in 2012 and no regrets. Florida is always hot and at least Georgia has 4 seasons. I live a little north of Atlanta and we get snow about every 2 years.

Over recent years, I’ve heard so many bad things about FL and so many good things about GA that I think you made the right decision.

I know you all have ginormous trees in Australia so this one probably isn’t so impressive in comparison, but around here they love to cut trees down and so there aren’t that many that old around here. Humans are an arrogant and thoughtless species.

  8. I can’t tell what kind of tree it is, but the wood looks beautiful. I hope someone puts it to better use than grinding it up or throwing it in a landfill. When a maple was cut down across the street from me, I made a cutting board from part of the stump.

It would look more beautiful still standing :( Maybe when I write my letter to them they can tell me what they plan on doing with its remains. Do you know why they cut the maple down across the street from you?

      1. They were replacing the street and sidewalk and the tree was dying – where the trunk split into two main branches, one side was dead. Once they finished the underground and paving work, the tree was replaced. A new tree was put in front of every house…on my side of the street, our house had been the only one on the block with a tree – all of the trees had been on the other side (where there are no power lines). The trees near me are now all different varieties, so the city did well this time; though our tree is now the oldest one on the block. It has been there for 27 years. All of the older trees are now gone. The biggest trees (which looked fine to me) were taken down before the utility and paving project.
