I barrahed Paw’s flatbed to go get de parts for my Electra and was halfway there when de vision of her put on de brakes.
Dat sun shore was shinin’ when I saw her. Flowers of every kind in her shiny blond hair. Her feet were bare and dirty; her thumb so big it done blotted out de sky.
“Get you a lift, Miss?”
Her butterfly lashes fluttered and I bout died when she smiled.
“Where you headed, Mister?”
“Wherever you need to get, Miss.”
She climbed into the cab. She smelled of carnations.
Sorry, Paw, call ya later!

My story is a nod to Sissy Hankshaw, one of my favorite characters from any of Tom Robbins’ books. Sissy is the protagonist of, “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.” It’s also a nod to Quentin Tarantino films with the female MC’s dirty, bare feet.

Rochelle Wisoff-Fields is the charismatic host of Friday Fictioneers.

Smitten is as smitten does… Awe. Very cute.

Well, Christian, you’re right, I sound like an old woman from Michigan with a nasal northerner accent. I just saw the woman like Sissy and the guy like a Cajun for some reason. I think they were headed west…

Ha! I really enjoyed this one. Great voice and I love the details he notices – dirty feet and a big thumb!!

:) Glad you enjoyed it. The dirty feet was a nod to Quentin Tarantino, who has a foot fetish and who often shows his females barefoot with dirty feet.

Fleur, thank you. And thank you for the marvelous photo to write to. What’s the story behind that picture, if you don’t mind me asking?

My story The Getaway, tell the story of that picture. It’s old-ish…taken 3 years ago. I’ve dropped the link to the Leichhardt Garden Centre in Goondiwindi to let them know about all these clever fun stories written about their Ute. If I get a reply I’ll post it below my story 🙂

Oh ok. I just read your story. I did not realize that the car is at the Garden Center in Goondiwindi. I love the creativity and the repurposing.

Goondiwindi is a clever, forward thinking town. These small towns have to put their print on the map and they’ve done a great job.
NZ towns are the same, they all have something quirky or unique to them to brag about…or just let everyone else talk about them and draw more interest 🙂

Good to know. They like to do that in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan also. One of the towns is Christmas and you can guess what it looks like year round :)

It took me a Google search and a couple of reads to get “barrahed.” The last line tied it together. Paw ain’t ne’er seein’ dat barrahed truck agin. It’s going wherever Miss Carnations is going.
