My favorite Radio Hits from 1977

nobody does it better

Max at Power Pop has a regular feature where he chooses his top songs from a particular year.  Instead of clogging up his comments section with my choices, here they are, and I’ve included a Spotify Playlist of my top 10 favorites.  These were taken from this list at playbackfm

What are your favorite radio hits from 1977?

  2. Great idea to post your own list, Lisa. I like all of your picks! My favorites from your list are “Solsbury Hill”, “Sir Duke” and “Maybe I’m Amazed”, though I prefer the live version of the latter, which is on the “Wings Over America” album.

BTW, did you know Peter Gabriel is finally coming out with a new album, “I/O”, this Friday? First new album in more than 20 years! He has been releasing singles from it for the past year or so. The other day, I spent some time with his new music and generally like what I’ve heard!

Thanks, Christian and glad you like some of the choices.

As a matter of fact, I had seen PG was putting out singles from an upcoming new album and liked one of the songs I heard from it. Did not realize it was being released this Friday. Thanks for the heads-up, buddy :)

Sir Duke, Maybe I’m Amazed, and Telephone Line… good catch on Solsbury Hill…probably my favorite song by him! Thanks Lisa! You should do this every week!

Great selections! I made my 1977 favorite songs list ten years ago, and it is very punk heavy: https://othemts.wordpress.com/2013/11/23/favorite-songs-of-1977/

I have “Sir Duke” on my 1976 list because I went by the album release instead of the single release, but it is a good enough song for two years!

1977 was a great year for music. There was punk, prog, new wave, rock, pop, disco to name but a few genres. Not all my favourites were radio hits though.

Same here, Glyn. I was into FM radio and AOR by then, but at that time AM radio was still bearable to listen to, so I was still listening to it.

I gotta go with Hotel California as my absolute fave. And I would pick “As” for my favorite song from Songs in the Key of Life. I agree with McCartney, ELO, and Peter Gabriel. Others? Corny, but maybe Billy Joel “Just the Way you Are” and Bob Seger “Night Moves”. (K)

I like those choices as well, Kerfe. Can’t go wrong with Billy Joel or Bob Seger and Hotel California is a haunting one.

IN 1977, I liked James Taylor and discovered Peter Gabriel with that song — which has to be my favorite that year and one of my all time favorites. Not as much Lionel Richie or Stevie Wonder as I had liked them more in prior years… Carly Simon, yes largely while I think I liked her better earlier; ELO, yep at that stage in life; Heart, no doubt at all (and I wish I’d seen them sometime); Aerosmith too (have seen them twice). I never really got into McCartney’s solo career (although I enjoy a song or two, Maybe I’m Amazed included, now nostalgically). Wasn’t thinking about Barbra, then… had been fascinated with her because she was cast for What’s Up Doc, though… and am fascinated with her again when I hear her or of her or see her now.

That would take some work to go figure out favorites from a year. I’m glad you took the time.

Appreciate your comment on the choices. Back then, I went to the movie theater quite a bit and anything with Barbra was an instant yes. I love her films as well as her voice. She’s a joy to watch and hear for me. Recently Colbert went to visit her and interview her at her place (you can find bits of it on YouTube) and she’s still in a class by herself. About the choices, it didn’t take that long to pick favorites from 100 songs and I’m getting the knack for creating Spotify playlists (thanks again, Christian!)

Ah, I see. And… sorry I didn’t include my name in my comment. I’m not the anonymous person who posted later (below) by the way. But interesting to remember disco was going on at the same time. I went to a discotheque for underage young people with a friend of mine a few times over the years.

I would have a little bit of a hard time narrowing that list down to ten. Crosby Stills and Nash would certainly be a selection. And Marvin Gaye. I never had any clue, then or now, that Elvis Presley put a hit out that year; not one if the songs among my picks. That is probably one of the years I would’ve answered that my favorite musicians were Fleetwood Mac and Elton John, thus… Dreams and Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word (to which album from which it comes I truly listened over and over). Kansas with Carry On My Wayward Son is a definite yes. Fly Like an Eagle, and I’m out of slots.

I had the Hall and Oates album… so… but I didn’t listen to it a lot. I had the Saturday Night Fever album as well, and I did enjoy the BeeGees and their Brother Andy Gibb for a couple years.

Hey, yeah, I saw that special episode. Fun — although I could’ve done without the way Colbert ended it. She is, yes, in a class by herself.

Aha, Marleen. WP makes us work so much harder than we need to to be able to comment on others’ posts. I like all of the groups and songs you mention. Loved the first Fleetwood Mac album with Buckingham-Nicks on it. Elton John has had so many excellent songs over the years. Steve Miller is another favorite. I remember how THRILLED I was to sit in the movie theater and watch Saturday Night Fever and the music was all over the airwaves. I like the old Bee Gee music also. Such a talented group of brothers!

With the Colbert thing are you talking about when he pulled out that pink knick knack? Not sure if that was the end or not? I watch Colbert in segments on YouTube.

Yes, he pulled it out, which could be like a little prank in the moment. But when he was back in studio, he showed it off and said something like doubling down (which I don’t remember).

I’ve noticed these two lists are different. Since Crosby Stills and Nash aren’t on the list at the noted link in your opening post, I’d switch that choice to “Lost Without Your Love” (by Bread).

1997 is about the time disco took over the airwaves. That’s when I re-enlightened myself to The Bee Gees.
