Favorite TV/Streaming series from 2023

Series, Series, Series!

2023

Just like my favorite movies, these are in no particular order and all are recommended as worthy watching material. The title links take you to YouTube trailers.

UFOs – French made with subtitles. The French equivalent of NASA’s top aeronautical engineer makes a flub and gets reassigned to the local branch of the UFO reporting department. It’s a quirky bunch of nerds. When some weird stuff starts happening, it looks like ET has landed. The problem is that the engineer has been given his orders to start documenting reasons to close the local branch. It’s a cute and often humorous show with cheesy special effects.

Pennyworth Season 3– You know Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth? This is a prequel to the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents, and before Bruce’s parents ever met. Alfred, known as Alfie, has just come back from the war with his buddies. Alfie’s dad is a butler and wants him to follow his footsteps as a butler but Alfie’s a wild child out for adventure. He and his mates get caught up in all kinds of adventures. This year the 3rd and final season aired.

Fire Country Season 1– set out on the west coast of California. It’s about a program for incarcerated inmates to get time knocked of their sentences if they participate in a volunteer firefighter’s program. They live in barracks and are a separate unit from the other firefighters, but they all fight fires side by side. The story focuses on Bodhi, sent to prison for a felony after leaving town after the death of someone close to him. The firefighting inmate program brings him back to face it all. The main character is a very good-looking guy. Lots of drama like a soap opera going on. Good cast and shows fire fighting close up. I admire anyone with the courage to do that job!

Poker Face – I wrote this one up already here.

1923, A Yellowstone Origin Story – If you look at Yellowstone being present times and 1899 being the origin story of the Dutton Family, 1923 is the middle of the saga, starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Thanks again, creator Taylor Sheridan.

Tulsa King – Sylvester Stallone has been serving a lot of years in prison for his Mafia Family boss. He is released and thinking he’ll get right back to business, but the capo’s son convinces daddy to send him away. He’s banished to Tulsa, OK, to set up gambling and crime operations there. He’s very angry at first, but he sees the Tulsa market is ripe for development and starts to thrive there. Of course home base tries to rein him in but keep taking their cut. Things start to get messy. Sylvester is perfect for the role and hope there is a Season 2.

Yellowstone – We are as far into the present as can be with Taylor Sheridan’s sweeping saga of the Dutton Family. Kevin Costner was out but now he’s back in. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Primal – animated, virtually wordless, it is a Prehistoric Man and his partner, the fair-sized carnivorous dinosaur, traveling the planet through varied environments and encountering various friends and foes. Ultra violent but the Man’s and Beast’s hearts shine through also.

Sweet Tooth – A deadly virus is wiping humans out, while at the same time women are giving birth to “hybrids” which are half-human/half-animal. The hybrids are immune to the deadly virus. Because they and the virus arose at the same time, the remaining humans are convinced it is their fault and start killing them. Sweet Tooth is the little boy hybrid who is half deer. Nonso Anozie plays Big Man, who used to hunt the hybrids but has had a change of heart and decides to protect Sweet Tooth. It’s a cross-country journey in search of Sweet Tooth’s mom, to places where devastation reigns and pockets of surviving humans form alliances with each other.

Only Murders in the Building – The Terrific Trio (Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short) of podcasting sleuths work at solving a murder in the theater and/or building in New York City.

Reservation Dogs — The young adults on the rez continue to navigate through situations with the help of their elders. Laugh and learn about Indigenous Ways!

Virgin River – a few years ago you never would have caught me watching such a sappy show, but here I am. It’s set up in the Pacific Northwest in a wildly beautiful location. Just a small town where the bar and the doctor’s house/office are the mainstays. A romance to end all romances develops between Jack, the bar co-owner, and Mel, the Obstetric Nurse Practitioner. Lots of goings-on with the lovable characters (some not-so-lovable) in Virgin River.

Pluto – apocalyptic anime that is a stylish noir murder mystery. Takes place in a future where some androids are more human than machine. It can get a little repetitive but is still worth a watch.

One Piece Netflix live action – One Piece started out as manga, then went to anime, and is one of the longest anime series that exists. One Piece is live action here. The main character, Monkey D Luffy, is a lively young man who is on a quest on the great seas, a young man with limitless hope who pulls together a very interesting crew of warriors and other types to seek out the big prize (forgot what it is they are after.) Lighthearted entertainment.

Guillermo del Torro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Mini Series. — Very scary stories that can haunt. Beware before you watch them. (not including a trailer for this one.)

Dark Winds – A reservation county sheriff is on the track of some evil men stealing sacred rituals from the Indigenous population. The sheriff is still investigating an explosion from Season 1 that killed his only son. Good acting, great cast, interesting plot.  Good teachings on Indigenous ways.

These 1899, Yellowstone, 1923 ones are TV at its best. Glad you’ve seen them, Randy.

  2. I hardly watch TV anymore. Most of the time I do it’s the news and very rarely late night comedy. As such, I’m not familiar with any of theses series. “Fire Country” looks intriguing.

I watch no TV per se, nothing with commercials. These are all DVD or streaming. Well, HULU, does have obnoxious, annoying, and repetitive ads but haven’t been watching HULU since Only Murders… and Res Dogs… seasons ended. What do you do in your evening hours if you’re not watching TV? Once I turn most of the lights out and sit down on the couch, that’s what I do at night.

      1. When I’m working, evenings are usually reserved for blog writing and reading, as well as listening to music. My wife and I also like to go on car rides at night and picking up some late night coffee.

          1. Blogging and listening to music are a welcome escape hatch. That said, it does take a good amount of time – time I don’t spend with my wife and son. It’s not always easy to find the right balance.

I avoid sweet like the plague, but there is something about this one that I like. They do a lot of talking through issues with each other so maybe it is that. Or maybe the gorgeous location. Glad you’ve seen some of it to know what I mean.

What are those about Glyn? I may be able to get them through the library. Also been thinking about trying BritBox. Glad you saw Yellowstone. Hope you get to see 1899 at least. That is REALLY good.

The first one is about two comedians going fishing. Actually there’s more to it than that even if you don’t like fishing. It’s a fun series.
Planet Earth 3 is one of those epic nature series with David Attenborough.
Blue Lights is a gritty police series set in Northern Ireland.
Top Boy is about two drug dealers returning to the gritty streets of London, but their pursuit of money and power is threatened by a young and ruthless hustler.

They sound good (except I mostly don’t do nature shows anymore, too many over the years.) Will write them down and give them a chance if possible.

The only one I’ve seen is Yellowstone because of you mentioning it. I’ve liked it but most of the shows I watch are older ones….and a lot of youtube channels.
    I do like Yellowstone though.
One show I would like to see one day is Stranger Things.

With Yellowstone you almost have to watch in chronological order to get the full impact. At least one of my kids and maybe both have seen Stranger Things but I know nothing about it. What makes you want to see it?

I’m a fan of Yellowstone nation, not so much the show itself, but the 1883, 1923 and Bass Reeves, as well as Tulsa King. I’ll check out the UFO show, I want to believe.

What’s the Bass Reeves? Is that a spinoff or something separate? UFO one is funny more than anything.

Bass Reeves is a spinoff from 1883. He was the first black Marshall for the Indian Territory in Arkansas and Oklahoma, late 1800s. My great grandfather was also a Marshall for the Indian territory and rode with him for a while. It’s a good show, much of it filmed in Strawn Texas, about an hour from my home in Granbury.

I will be on the lookout for it! Last year I watched the HBO Series Watchmen, which gives the graphic novel a whole other spin. It starts out in Tulsa in 1921 and a small child sitting in a movie theater watching a silent movie about the black Marshall Bass Reeves. Sounds like the same guy.

I had hoped there’d be a third season of Pennyworth; thanks for mentioning it. I’ve enjoyed some of the other shows you included here, will check out a few that I haven’t seen of what you listed as well.

Plus, I might start watching the second episode of Bass Reeves today or tomorrow… with my youngest son who is visiting. I didn’t know that it’s a tie-in to 1883. I did know it is by the same writer, Taylor Sheridan.

They promote S3 of Pennyworth as the final season, but I’ve been seeing here and there that they may continue it. I hope so!

Very cool on Bass Reeves. Did not realize he was a real Marshall, which makes it all the better.
