MMB 2024 Week 1 (A-B) — Arc Angels and Doyle Bramhall II

Arc_Angels_(album)

Because week 1 includes A and B, I want to include two songs that both involve one performer.

I remember hearing one or two of their songs on the radio, but the way I came to the group was through Doyle Bramhall II when he played David Gilmour’s guitar parts on Roger Waters’ three-year tour of “In the Flesh – Live,” which resulted in an album and a DVD that was filmed and recorded June 16-27, 2000. Watching and hearing Bramhall got me interested enough to find other music he had been involved with and found Arc Angels.

Arc Angels is a blues rock supergroup formed in Austin, Texas in the early 1990s. The band came together after the death of Stevie Ray Vaughan and was composed of Vaughan’s friends Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton and two of the band members from Vaughan’s band Double Trouble, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon.

The ‘Arc’ in the band’s name came from the Austin Rehearsal Complex where the band first started jamming.

Arc Angels has put out only two albums, their eponymous debut in 1992 and “Living in a Dream” in 2009, that contains live renditions of previously released Arc Angels songs, new songs performed live, and three new studio tracks.

The song, “Sent by Angels,” is from the debut album, is the 3rd cut, and was written by Doyle Bramhall II.

I can see angel eyes
And I feel myself arise
Well I know, you’re so wonderful
And I know, you’re not from this world

You were sent by angels
From the sky above
Sent by angels

I can feel you when I fantasize
I could show you when I’m inside
Then I’ll know you’re so wonderful
And I know you’re not from this world

You were sent by angels
From the sky above
Sent by angels

I can see the other side
I can hear the distant cry
And I know you’re so wonderful
And I know you’re not from this world

You were sent by angels
From the sky above
Sent by angels

Songwriter:  Doyle Bramhall II

I’ve kept up with Doyle’s music and have 3 of his albums. If you look at wiki, you’ll see that he has a lengthy musical pedigree. My favorite album of his that I have (so far) is 2016’s “Rich Man.” The song I’ve chosen from it is the first cut on it, “Mama Can’t Help You (Believe It.)”

Yo’ mama can’t help you no more
Believe it

Well, well, well, baby
Oh, yeah
I’m sorry that I looked your way
Didn’t know what I was getting into
And everything I had to lose
To get small enough to fit in your life
So I got to sit down and think about it’
Cause you’re taking me out
I lost myself
Nothing left to lose
I don’t want no more shit now
And I’m tired of living this way
And you’re causing

Oh, Yo’ mama can’t help you no more
Oh, you’re alone now
Yo mama can’t help you no more
And she’s lonely just like you

I’m not into living this way
And I ain’t playing, baby
I’ve got to make a move
With my heart in the dirt and my toes on the yard
Oh I can’t see past your knee
Your jealousy and greed now
You take everything
And I’m out on the street

Can’t help you no more
No, can’t help you no more
You’re making a mess of me
Using up everything
No, yo’ mama can’t help you no more
Oh, baby
You’re making a mess of me
Using up everything

Yeah, Oh, that man don’t fit no more
I can’t help you with that no more
I gotta a new life
I got my whole stuff back

But I ain’t got my watch
Ain’t that cold?

Glyn is the host of Mixed Music Bag.  For week 1, and through January, we are to find groups or solo artists that begin with the letter “A” or “B.”  I finagled both in this post lol

The first song, especially, has a very Allman Brothers feel. I like his voice. (K)

<3 Glad you are on board with how good this one is. I love the guy's music. If you look at all of the people he's backed up (he makes them look good) you know he is a winner.

  5. I like both songs! Somehow the name Doyle Bramhall II sounds familiar, but I can’t remember in what context I previously came across him. I don’t think it was Roger Waters since I generally haven’t followed his solo career.

Christian, I’ve mentioned him several times, maybe that’s why?

p.s. The Roger Waters tour was a lot of the Pink Floyd music but also some of Waters’ solo tunes.
