Let There Always Be Light — Rebecca Elson
Vervain sage incense
thin reeds to ceiling sky.
Kneeled bedside to pray:
Let there always be light
My anxious crawl to reve’s
tempered breath’s scrawl,
a fathomless, immutable
pledge: there shall ever be.

I haven’t burned incense in ages, but that “light” smoke looks quite familiar from when I last did so. A wonderful pledge to make.

Naturally I am curious about vervain incense, wondering if I would enjoy it. ‘The line’ is perfectly placed and the image is mesmerizing.

Helen, the Esteban company used to make vervain scented incense but not anymore afaik. Vervain has the scent of verbenas so if you like those you probably would.

:) I actually tried to take a pic last night of my incense waft but not as easy as it looks.

If ever poetry were like incense, this would be it, Lisa, the sweet incense of prayer and amen.
