Friday Favorite Feature 20 — “Try,” by Stan Snow

Stan Snow Into the Great Beyond 2023

I wrote each song to satisfy the music fan within. After I finished writing each tune, I would ask myself – ‘what do I want to hear now?’…and I would write the next tune based on what I was hearing in my head. — Stan Snow, about, “Into the Great Beyond”

Sorry for posting this late.  Been getting up even later and had some errands to run earlier.  “Try” is another song from Spotify’s Release Radar.  I had never heard of Stan Snow before but it’s a song in the playlist of favorites from RR that I’m growing to like a lot.  It has a definite Carlos Santana meets Steely Dan flavor to it.  The lyrics are uplifting.

Here’s a blurb about him and his new album, “Into the Great Beyond” from FolkNRock.com:

Seattle musician,Stan Snow, is a busy man. When he’s not playing with his acclaimed band, The Sundogs, he’s creating vibrant new Indie Rock, Americana and Classic Rock music solo, albeit with a host of A-List collaborators. His new full-length album “Into the Great Beyond” features the likes of Abe Laboriel Jr. (Paul McCartney,) Valerie Pinkston (Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston,) Lyle Workman (Sting, Beck,) and Ben Smith (Heart,) among others. Through all of his work, a selfless wisdom pervades the lyricism, giving an uplifting, wholehearted energy to the seasoned, groove-heavy rock n’ roll on display.

Try

Fly until the night is falling
Sail into the morning sun
Turn the unforgiving minute
In to another distance run

All things come to pass
Don’t let it drag you down
Break free, lose your way
(and) Try……to pick yourself up again
Try……to pick yourself up again

Move until your strength is failing
Hold on to the razors edge
Feel like there is no tomorrow
Find a way to raise the dead

All things come to pass
Don’t let it drag you down
Break free, lose your way
(and) Try……to pick yourself up again
Try……to pick yourself up again

[instrumental]

All things come to pass
Don’t let it drag you down
Break free, lose your way
(and) Try……to pick yourself up again
Try……to pick yourself up again

[instrumental]

Nice positive lyrics which are refreshing. I think you nailed it on the whole Carlos Santana Steely Dan vibe. New to me!

Thanks, Randy. What’s funny is when I go to sites talking about the Sundogs, Stan Snow isn’t listed? Right now it is a mystery.

You know…to me….not because of the video…but it has a surf music vibe for me. I do hear a little latin also…very sixties garage band to me in a way….and that is a good thing.

It does…the thing I take away is what I try to do with my music…is try to make it timeless…and it is.

Yes you have! We talked about it around 3 weeks ago….so it should be soon but I started to remix some things lately. I’m trying to make them sound decent on computer speakers as well as headphones.

  3. I like the song, Lisa, and definitely would have included it in my new music review today, had I been aware of it.

Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? It’s incredibly beautiful and friggin’ unreal!

Glad you like the song, Christian. I’m finding some wonderful gems in there.

Been to Grand Canyon once, on a trip with my cousin where we explored AZ for a number of days. We only walked along the edge and was happy to have water along the way. I can see how dangerous it could get without it. Yes it is a gorgeous place. I also loved Flagstaff and Sedona. So many different terrains in that state.

      1. The Grand Canyon was one of the highlights when I first visited the U.S. as a 14-year-old. Coming from a comparatively small and relatively densely populated country, Germany, the dimensions and amazing landscapes in the southwestern part of the country were simply mind-boggling! And the fact that in certain areas we would drive for an hour or longer and not meet another car!

You know, Christian, I have heard so many people who have lived in densely populated places say they are astounded at how big the US is when they visit. I know when my older son visited Germany some years back how “cramped” he felt with the density, saying the idea of personal space is much different there. It’s all about what you’re used to and what you might be willing to get used to, I think. Yes, a lot of the US is empty space, except for the urban hot spots. I am guessing NJ is pretty densely populated so you probably feel like you’re home there? When I went to Toronto I totally freaked out at how densely populated it was. 8-lane highways about did me in.

          1. Actually, our area in New Jersey has a rural feel and in that sense reminds me a bit of where I grew up in Germany. That said, my parents’ house was in a village that at the time had about 2,000-2,500 inhabitants. By comparison, our New Jersey township of East Brunswick has a population of close to 50,000. But with plenty of forest, fields and farms surrounding it, it still feels more like the countryside than an urban area.
