snow stilts

Winter Smiles

I sit at the window nursing a hot mug of tea, watching the village children play with their new Christmas gifts in the midday snow.

warm knuckles tap pane
small, round faces look and smile
stilts’ holes line the path

Winter’s End of Day

Street lights come on in blue-white nightfall. Neighbors’ doors open; parents call children in. Stilts remain outside; tall, propped along the front stoops.

Cold crows hop bare spots
pecking possibilities
gleaming silhouettes

I love the haibun, both of yours are lovely… I feel the chill. The poor crows well all the birds have a hard time around now in our cold climate…I think you must be cold than us but possibly you’re more used to it. It’s zero here right now up minus 1c last night.
I like the first Haibun too drinking coffee watching the children… Lovely. 💜

It wa a cold and frosty morning over here in what’s often called ‘Sunny’ Cornwall.

Glyn, when I was a teenager, I read many historical romance novels set in Cornwall. Funny, most of them were not sunny at all! Maybe that’s why ‘Sunny’ is in parentheses?

I talked to Keith today…he lives in Michigan and he was talking about the snow. Now they have moved it from Monday to Sunday night! I sure hope it snows and sticks.

I do also…I hope it sticks so I can stay at home Monday and work…which I should be able to do anyway…but regardless… all it takes is an inch here to shut us down.

You are making me miss west Michigan!!! Love the poems, and your video is lovely, too. Sigh. Of course, I worry about my mom with the storm coming in. At her retirement community they will be on very short staff this weekend!

So your mom still lives in MI? It’s not super bad right now. The roads are fairly clear.

  8. Beautiful video (and accompanying music), Lisa! I especially love that I can enjoy it from my warm house in South Florida (lol). I loved your poem and could imagine the kids having fun with those stilts.

Happy to bring some winter to you there, Yvette. When I saw stilts in the kigo list I knew that’s where I wanted to take it.

  9. Lisa, your haibun beautifully captures the serene scenes of winter, the joy of village children playing, and the symbolic imagery of stilts and cold crows. The haikus evoke a vivid picture of the season’s charm. Well done!
