Hey You

Not going to name any name(s)
but there’s a sneaking suspicion
that one of my commentors has
begun using AI commenting, at
least some of the time. When I
have fully focused on reading
hundreds of your comments over
the years and suddenly I read what
sounds like a stranger, a pall is
cast over you. Like losing an
old friend; or that a friend feels
my work isn’t enough to warrant
more than a machine blip spit.
If I’m right, dear blogmate, I beg:
either stop AI comments or
unfollow my blog. Yours truly.

Ouch. Are they speaking more intellectually boring when they comment. Like how can you tell ? Or did they go from Yo that’s dope to Dearest Blogger this post is at another level of excellence.

After reading someone’s comments for years a change is very noticeable. The comments have turned into paraphrases that cover whatever was in the poem.

I ‘bot’ you’re on to something Lisa! AI has no place on either end of a WordPress blog.

100% agreed. I’ve come across AI written blogs and just won’t read them. I won’t read the comments either if I pick up on them.

Lisa, I had exactly the same thought a month or two ago. The comments were just retellings of my poem in a factual manner. This person (?) only commented twice, thankfully. AI scares me to death.

An unknown AI commenter is bad enough but a person you know that suddenly starts spouting it is a real wake-up call. What an insult :( AI scares me also. My kids seem totally unconcerned which scares me even more.

I can’t remember the person who I suspected of it and they either stopped reading my blog or stopped using it. Maybe it was just an experiment.

You would know this person. Sorry, I don’t like being an unwitting guinea pig.

Is it posted in your comments or did you take it off?

Yes, still there, but I would prefer not to specifically identify the person.

  4. That’s terrible, Lisa, and I hope you’re wrong about it. That said, A.I. is creeping up everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing inherently wrong with A.I. as such and there are legitimate uses for it. But, unfortunately, like with pretty much all potent technologies, there’s plenty of room for abuse, and humans are great at screwing up stuff!

It’s a tool that can be abused. The very idea of using it to give a “personalized” comment to somebody you “know” is, as you describe it, abuse.

      1. 100%! I’m also not sure why you would do that. If you don’t have anything to say, simply don’t comment!

I too feel after reading some posts that perhaps they weren’t written by the bloggers themselves. Why do people write if they don’t want to write themself.

Good Question! If a person has too many responses to write, then write less, or change settings on a post so comments aren’t allowed until they get caught up or something. To me it is unethical.

Yes, but these are a little different, they pull in data from the post itself.

One of the things I was pondering during my last period away from WordPress was… if and when I jumped back into it, how prevalent would AI be in either people posting or people commenting? It doesn’t surprise me that you’ve identified activity that looks “foreign.” It’s a shame.

Sad state of affairs. At least for now it’s fairly easy to distinguish which ones are AI, but I fear in time you won’t be able to.

  12. AI can do commenting now? Can it make bad puns and typos yet or ami still safe?

You know, I noticed one person in particular whose comments became very strange, but I didn’t connect that they could be AI generated–but of course, that’s exactly what they are and why they rub me the wrong way, however complementary they seem to be. It’s upsetting because I like that person but it’s not their “voice” at all. Just don’t comment if you don’t have time to write something on your own…I agree completely. (K)
