Red Dragon
Smoke smell
fastened, pulled
from valley, I
climb the hill
to barren ash.
Trauma woods
fire-blackened,
uprights flattened.
Bracken-scaled,
flexing talons,
vengeful dragon.
Imagining what
passion called,
where sense
crawled, slack-
jawed madness,
scorched earth
fashion, happened.
Knight pageant,
cannon-wagonned
batten down for fight.
With this, my method was to go to rhymezone, put in imagine and look for rhymes and near-rhymes.

Lillian is today’s host for dVerse’ Quadrille Monday. Today’s prompt for a 44-word poem is imagine.

You had a dragon too, and how great is that when soon we will be in the year of the dragon.

oooh….loving this dragon! Yours is quite different from the one that appears in Bjorn’s post and the nicotine dragon breath clouds in Kim’s. Lots of dragons today! Great image too!

Cool bit of synching between Bjorn, Kim, and I. Wondering how many more dragons we’ll see.

Wow! Another dragon – and a red one! These lines have a powerful, magical lyricality:
‘where sense
crawled, slack-
jawed madness,
scorched earth
fashion, happened’.

Sounds scary, woods I don’t want to be in. You’ve done a great job evoking dis-ease with this piece.

That dragon is p—– off about something. Hoping the knights can reason with it short of cannon fire.

Nicely done and the near rhymes work well in this piece.

Yes. Hoping Mother Gaia’s Emissary is a kinder and gentler blue, green, or yellow.

I love it… your poem, your great rhymes, and you colorful dragon. As I was reading it felt like the dragon was really a lava flow from the volcano!

War on the mountain? I like your rhyme and your dragon. Do you belong to the World Dragon Day? I am a member, very quiet member. Several of the writers here belong.

At least for this year, World Dragon Day was January 16. The group is open, you can look here,

I know that Rosemary in the Friday Writings group is, I think about four or five of my Facebook friends are members. It is very small and posting comes by spirts.

Great rhyming and that dragon pic is cool but I do hope the year of dragon sees good dragons doing the fire-fighting for us.

Yes it is. I like Dwight’s idea that lava is flowing down the side of the hill and burning the landscape.

Every wildfire, spontaneously generated or dragon-flamed, is a trauma woods. I think it would be a little warm to walk in right now anyway.

Not too far from us, we have trauma woods where a tornado swept through.

Lisa, I love your haunting portrait of destruction and resilience. You’ve really managed to weave together imagery of a ravaged landscape and the looming presence of a vengeful dragon!

Happy to hear it. I learned it’s the Chinese New Year Wood Dragon and its ironic this dragon is flaming the forest, but maybe it will allow for new growth this year.
