Remember a couple of Friday’s ago, my Friday Favorite Feature, was Taj Mahal with his Swingin’ Sextet singing Queen Bee? After hearing it, I immediately ordered the album (CD) which arrived today. Listening to it, I about fell out of my chair when I heard this song. Who is this Trey Hensley??? The ghost of George Jones alighted and the joy rose in my heart.
Per wiki, Trey Aaron Hensley (born 1990) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Hensley made his first public appearance on the Grand Ole Opry at age 11 with Marty Stuart and Earl Scruggs. Hensley moved to Nashville in 2013 and formed a duo with dobro player Rob Ickes. Hensley and Ickes released the GRAMMY-nominated album Before the Sun Goes Down (2015) on Compass Records label, The Country Blues (2016), and World Full of Blues (2019.)
Both Trey and Rob are sitting in with Taj, his bassist, Bill Rich, very recently passed on drummer, Kester Smith (who pass just 10 days before the release of the album,) and electric guitarist/Hawaiian lap steel player Bobby Ingano to make up the sextet.
“Lovin’ in My Baby’s Eyes” is the 4th track, just after Queen Bee. Hold on to your socks.
Randy, I’m just as bowled over as you are. I am listening to the album and expecting Taj only on vocals. When Trey’s voice showed up it was double surprise. This album is par excellence! Doing a little more reading, not only is the church where Leon Russell recorded, it was renovated in 2022, which I’m guessing means they installed new/upgraded acoustical stuff. The resonance is SO GOOD.
Cool. I’m on vacay from writing and reading through March (other than a few prompts and something like this) but will keep my eye out for a Leon post :)
Very cool, Lisa. Since Taj Mahal entered my radar screen about seven years ago, I’ve really come to dig the music he plays. I also like how he frequently teams up with other talented musicians, reaching across generations. I had never heard of Trey Hensley who sounds mighty sweet to me. Now I guess I have to check out Mahal’s new live album as well. I knew it came out but haven’t had the chance to listen to it yet! :-)
Thanks, Nancy. Last night I found Trey and the dobro player on spotify. The difference in the music and sound quality are very noticeably inferior to the Taj Mahal recording, which is a shame. Trey and Dobro need to make some changes in material and production if they want to get noticed.
that is good Lisa :D I liked it!

That of course brought to mind the great Flatt & Scruggs and “Roll in my Sweet Baby’s Arms”.

This is great, Lisa! For me Trey is a little bit George Jones and a little bit Kenny Chesney. That’s not a bad combo right there. Excellent find!
