Snapshots for Midsummer’s Album
Wilted birds and flowers
must patiently wait
as black hose flushes smoldering hot water
to cool; to quench thirsty
throats and flood parched beds.
When long days overstay
when shy short nights hide
eyes long for moonlight in midsummer darkness
twinkling stars and fireflies
lost in cool’s magic
I grab the bigger can
to fill with rec gas;
cutting the grass has become avocation.
Robins like it cut short,
but mosquitoes don’t.

Below are three kigo phrases for the Northern Hemisphere. Use one kigo phrase in each of your three poems in whatever order you’d like. If you can’t write three poems, please write at least one.
- #1: “smoldering heat”
- #2: “midsummer darkness”
- #3: “cutting the grass”

What a realistic picture of summer! This poem conveys a subtle message of patience.

Great poem, Lisa! If it keeps the mosquitoes away, I’d keep it really short. Lol!

Since the mosquitoes love me, I have to be careful of the time of day I go out. We actually had a very nice long gentle rain last night. But you couldn’t tell by the afternoon as everything dried up… again.
Stay cool!

Yes, the skeeters get real hungry at certain times don’t they. Nice you had rain last night, but not enough, just like here. It seems like the temp is so hot it takes whatever falls right back :( You too, stay cool!

Be grateful you don’t have Aussie mosquitoes…they don’t need grass or anything..just ever present:)…..Rall

I don’t envy you. Ours don’t take to the air until around dusk, when it cools down.

This is a beautiful, relatable snapshot of life, Lisa… And I’m so with you regarding the mosquitoes… ugh – I’ll do anything to keep them away!
Much love,
