Horizon Extinction
Last week, Sonya Massey’s parents learn that Veep Kamala, a black woman, may soon be POTUS. Friends gather after church service to celebrate with strong coffee and buttery pastries. They breathe deeply; their grandbabies may live long lives with equal consideration from governmental institutions and their agents. Hope stirs like a gentle breeze.
Today, Sonya’s parents are mourning. Last night, their daughter called 911 for help. Instead, two thugs arrived. Sonya was shot; her life ebbed onto her kitchen floor.

Their attorney will make them all pay in languages they understand.

Notes: The story can stand alone, but I feel additional information would be helpful. This is non-fiction. On July 6, Sonya Massey was murdered by a police officer. I’m linking a Democracy Now! video to the bottom of this post if you want to learn more about this egregious situation. I only learned about it yesterday from my Daughter In-Law and looked up the video today.
I used some acronyms and other terms that might not be clear:
Veep = Vice President of the United States of America
POTUS = President of the United States of America
911 = the number to call for emergencies in this area

Besides my rage and my horror is curiosity. The shooter was careful to turn his body cam off, but his partner captured it all on video. Why? Is it because he wanted to stop this evil monster from killing again? Or was he so arrogant the video would never see the light of day that he didn’t bother to turn it off?

Thanks for covering this, Lisa. When you call the police to report a prowler, the police aren’t supposed to come into your house and kill you. I’m not sure there were two thugs – definitely one. He has been charged with first degree murder. Since the other officer’s body cam will be a major part of the evidence, he may not be a thug.

I can only fantasize, but I wish the other guy would have put a bullet in the shooter’s skull instead of standing by, first, to watch an innocent victim be shot in the face, and second, to then stand by and watch the life ebb out of the victim. Unconscionable and inexcusable. He needs to go into gen pop to serve his sentence, which really won’t be as long as people think it will be.

What’s horrifying to me is that such a person (using the term loosely) was on the police force to begin with. Unthinkable. Your story is well written. Tragic. Nuff said.

Rochelle, I have to wonder also. I hope they sue sue sue. It’s the only language municipalities understand. And as for this “agent of ____” can’t wait to see him go into gen pop. I know an eye for an eye will blind the world, but in this case will make an exception. The cops here are hulking brutes and the victim was so small and vulnerable.

When a “female agenda” is equally empowered with a man’s, the violence could subside. Hundreds of years of repression and victimhood will take time to neutralize, and the quickest if we are stepping in the right direction. Thanks for reading and your comment, Lizy.

Oh wow. As an American also, I’m not sure quite what to say. Wonderfully written is the first thing. Second, the situation in the US is dire. Law enforcement is in a dilemma. It’s the first time in my rather long memory that I think the political beliefs of law enforcement officers may impact their professional judgement and in a country as filled with guns as the US, that is quite scary.It’s not a comfortable place to live right now, at least not for me. I would so love to live in a country where my neighbor didn’t have an arsenal of AR15s and other weapons of war standing in his garage, but I’m not that fortunate. You triggered my anxieties a bit here, but the story has to be told. These things happen when a country is teetering on the edge of democracy vs authoritarianism. I’ve fought the “women are equal” fight in the work place and personally for 50 years. It’s not much better than 50 years ago. If Kamala could help, that would be wonderful. The other option is unthinkable. Wow. Powerful.
