#FF — Granny’s Pride

Granny’s Pride

I choose notecard and stamp carefully. Both images express what I’m finding difficult to say in words. The stamp’s image is a black bird perched in a red, white, and blue apple tree. The notecard depicts an Olympic swimmer with fingertips touching the victory edge of the pool first.

I’ve watched my baby girl from the time her mama brought her home from the hospital. Even then I could tell she was going places.

She visits me when she can. For now, I will send her a note, saying that her Granny’s proud of her. But she already knows that.

[100-102 words]

I think notecard is really 2 words.

This was lovely, Lisa. And no, notecard can be written as one word. Grandmas featured in both of our notes :)

My pleasure and yes (plus, I ended up cheating because I added the xoxo four times, which technically increases my word count to 104). Pfft!
        I did!!

I’m with Neil on this one. I felt the sadness of the grandmother, accepting that her granddaughter was too busy to say “hello” now and then. Whether or not you intended , that’s what I felt. Beautifully written.

Thank you, “Someone.” It may or may not be what I intended, but once a story is out there it is open to anyone’s interpretation.

I can feel the granny’s love for her granddaughter in this, and I can relate to her difficulty in ‘finding the right words’ and hoping the images will convey what she can’t say. I’m always stumped by what to write in a greeting card. Getting that balance right between formulaic thoughts and sincere feelings. There’s so much room for individual interpretation in your story, as others have indicated. Beautifully done.

  7. Dear Lisa,

I really love what you did with the prompt. The picture on the card is actually a “selfie”. ;) I love the grandma POV and a note to her Olympic swimming granddaughter. Just a happy story that makes me smile.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

Rochelle, I used your image (yes, I know that’s you) and adapted it as a metaphor for Kamala in the context of now. Thank you very much for your comment and happy it made you smile.
      Shalom,

One day – she may out swim Katie Ledecky?

Grandparents are supposed to be proud and supportive – When we are kept in the loop that is. After a certain point – I know I wasn’t very interested when my grands came to visit… The adults talked and we teens visited our friends. At least we are close enough to celebrate holidays together… It was really nice to see my grands play with the younger twin nephews this summer :)

I reread it after I saw your comment about the metaphor and now see details I hadn’t paid attention to at first read. It’s brilliant and with stamp and card everything is already said. Hope, pride, and resilience, it’s all there.

  12. I feel the Granny’s love and pride in this, not really any sadness other than the wish they had more time together. Timely story with the Olympics now taking place. So very well written, Lisa!
