Spun
Sticky drops of spin
spin centrifuge of deceit
distilled to juju toxins;
cut, powdered, pressed, pilled
pushed through professional pads
dealt on dark nets.
Mirages, tasty pumped placebos,
candyflossing brains with webs,
while mad rulers fiddle
us dizzy stuck shells,
scrambled scribes of tell.

De Jackson (aka WhimsyGizmo) is today’s host of dVerse’ Quadrille Monday. De wants us to write a quadrille form poem (exactly 44 words minus title) using spin.

Too much fake news… to much money where it does nothing for no one. And yet there are good people and those who help those in need. Just found out that my one DIL actually belongs to some kind of volunteer animal resuce place. On top of all the other things…
I’m glad I can choose to sit back. I’ve done quite a bit of volunteering over the years. I like being a committee of one. I don’t argue with myself all that much ;)

Lovely comment. I used to do a lot of volunteering when I worked. I do it once in awhile now. I can imagine you have done a lot of good over the years.

Among other things I sang in a volunteer choir for over 15 years. I was also a Cub Scout leader …

Both sound fun. Volunteer choir? What was that about? I did stuff like ticket selling, bartending, public space clean-ups, transporting juvenile probationers to deliver hot meals for the needy, plant sale fundraisers.

I’ll send you an email tomorrow… :)
I didn’t realize how late it was. We did go to a BBQ this afternoon. But I haven’t had dinner yet! Something light… some reading, and then to snooze. :)

I read your email this morning. Wow, Jules, you took volunteering to the next level. Xtreme Volunteering! I wonder what the world would be like without volunteers…

Just keeping busy. Sometimes while hubby was out of town on business. Sometimes when I worked part time on weekends and evenings – he was in charge of the kiddos. I rarely asked what they did. I’d get home and everyone was safe – that was all that mattered.
I guess with all the volunteering hubby did as well, our boys, now men (did and) continue to do so. Along with what all else they do to pay the bills. Good hearts keep the world at the right kilter.
Thank you to for all you did.

and oh yes, cleaning at the cat shelter right after I retired. Covid put an end to that when other volunteers refused to wear masks.

EEK… I would think cleaning out a cat shelter you’d want to wear a mask!

Yes. And many of the cats had “conditions” that made their excretions from every orifice a lot to deal with. We had to spray disinfectant on our shoes that we wore when working (I had a special pair of old tennies I wore only there) and throw our clothes in the washer as soon as we got home and then shower.

Too much spin and so hard to separate what the actual truth is anymore. The sticky webs they weave…it’s never-ending I’m really spinning now…well done!! :)

Di, thanks. Indeed on “the actual truth” which even then comes from a base of relativity. Clarissa Pinkola-Estes wrote about “the wolf’s eyelash” that one can use for discerning. With the way they can manipulate images, videos, voices these days though, everything is suspect in the media!

Media certainly cannot be relied on anymore.

The business models themselves make this happen… and it starts with a cat-video.

I’ve written along the same lines which I’ll post later. Too much of that kind of spin around these days! (K)

Kerfe, I’m tired of being “pitched to.” Everybody seems to be selling something, even if it is a point of view. Looking forward to reading yours.

I agree. I don’t want one more person telling me what I “deserve”.

Excellent use of both alliteration and metaphor here, Lisa. Your descriptions spin deep, and stick strong.

Powerful truths you expose in your poem! Spinning has always been with us but the tools are so sophisticated now that it’s harder and harder to discern it. I like the angry tone of the outcry and the super-creative use of the words, which you spun together beautifully to convey your meaning and create a feeling of “ick” in us readers as we consider the spin and its impact on our lives, both at the individual and collective, societal level. Nicely done!

I like your drug manufacturing metaphor that subtly transforms into political spin – excellent, Lisa…

Andrew, thank you. Social media is an opiate of the masses all by itself as well.

Such an apt poem,Lisa,in the current situation. Half the issues are because of the kind of news being spun and fed to us. A few people with little or no self-control need just that to make a nuisance of themselves. During the curfew in Dhaka last month, we’ve had to be extra vigilant about letting the news being thrown at us affect us.

Sticky drops of spin indeed Li. The metaphor is a parallelism that is a gut punch. Like the opiate pushers and the media pushers, all a veneer to cheat.
