“There’s no place like home”
Farm hand pump trickles
water into livestock trough,
its clarity is interrupted only
by textured superficiality.
Water into livestock trough
serves as mirror and magnifier
for still, swimming pool blue.
Its clarity is interrupted only
by patched seam, goldenrod reflections,
and a single milkweed puff.
By textured superficiality,
benefactor’s childhood home returns, with
smooth, odorless animal sculptures.
*Title taken from, _The Wizard of Oz_, by L. Frank Baum (the film, adapted from the book of the same name.)
Trimeric form by Dr. Charles A. Stone
This poem is about the farm that has been (re)created at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. Read more about it here.
Colleen Chesebro is the host of TankaTuesday. Colleen notes that this is our last week of the 24 Seasons Syllabic Poetry Challenge. It has been a blast and has helped me to improve my poetry through using season words (kigo) and trying out new poetic forms. ♥Thank You, Colleen!♥
This final week of SSPC, Colleen says:
write a syllabic poem of your choice.

While not all homes have the same circumstances, the kind of home you’re vividly describing here certainly does justice to the saying, “There’s no place like home.”

You hooked me in with the title… A Baum fan here. Farms are wonderful places to see how the earth and animals can be cared for. I did catch the seed in the photo. Enchanting…

Lisa, thanks so much for writing poetry with me through the 24 Seasons of Japan. That last stanza really speaks to me. Sometimes I smell a certain flower or scent on the breeze, and I’m instantly transported back to my childhood home. You captured that so well. 🧡
