I take it slow, to savor
his focused meticulousness
to get it right in the telling.
As an Irishman, his daring
to be honest in the telling
is luxury not been afforded
over so many lengthy,
dedicated oppressions.

I really like this. It’s clear the book has made an impression, and the verse is real in its admiration of truth-telling.

I gained this (formerly consciously unaware of) kernel of my cultural heritage some years back from my play therapy professor. I mentioned something about the ways of a couple of my relatives. Once she planted that seed, it germinated in my mind.
I also think when you’ve hidden and/or stretched the truth for too long, you have forgotten how to do it.

It’s pretty magnificent and freeing when we make those discoveries about ourselves, and they can help release us from past practices that don’t work and maybe never did.
