Midnight Oil Day (aka MOD) Top 10 Songs from 6th, 7th, and 8th Albums

I just happened to catch a glimpse of Midnight Oil in the CD carousel and thought today is a good Midnight Oil Day, which I proclaim shall be the 23rd of December and to be posted at noon (except this year!) because in Australia I believe it is midnight? Please Aussies, correct me if I’m wrong.

Midnight Oil (MO) is socially conscious and environmentally aware and advocate for ethical choices in this thing we call life. Our Mother Earth is precious. It gives us life. We must treat her with respect. They get the messages across with their lyrics, their music, and their hearts.

From wiki:
Midnight Oil (known informally as “The Oils”) are an Australian rock band composed of Peter Garrett (vocals, harmonica,) Rob Hirst (drums,) Jim Moginie (guitar, keyboard) and Martin Rotsey (guitar.) The group was formed in Sydney in 1972 by Hirst, Moginie and original bassist Andrew James as Farm: they enlisted Garrett the following year, changed their name in 1976, and hired Rotsey a year later. Peter Gifford served as bass player from 1980 to 1987, with Bones Hillman then assuming the role until his death in 2020. Midnight Oil have sold over 20 million albums worldwide as of 2021.

Looking at wiki, I see that MO had 5 studio albums before they came onto my radar with Diesel and Dust’s, “Beds are Burning.” I bought it and the next two, “Blue Sky Mining” and, “Earth and Sun and Moon.” I’m choosing my top 10 favorites from these 3 albums. Maybe next MOD I’ll visit albums 1-5. You’ll see which one of the 3 albums is my favorite by the Spotify playlist.

I remember them well in the 80s. Didn’t Garrett become a politican there? Anyway… they have some great sounding songs…Beds Are Burning is the one I remember best but I like the sound of all of them.

Yes – generally 12 hours different depending on daylight saving in either country and depending on local time zones.

Not in the west where I live but they do in every other state. so in summer Sydney and Melbourne are three hours ahead of us. Works the other way for the US – when it’s d’verse OLN in your summer I get it an hour earlier! In Western Australia our state govt has tried over many decades to introduce it but there’s a solid no vote every time. Apparently it will cause curtains to fade faster and the cows won’t milk, lol.

I’m not surprised, Paul. They rock and their songs are meaningful.

Yes, very strong social justice bent. Garret of course, a lawyer, became a federal MP in the Rudd labor govt but sadly discovered that govt isn’t responsive to individuals, their most recent album is interesting.

Did not know Garret was a lawyer. Have you ever seen that TV show Rake? I watched at least some of it a few years ago and loved it.

I’ve seen it twice through, such a riot. One of my fave shows and, I think, more than just a little bit true in parts.

I love their run of albums in the late 80s/early 90s but haven’t checked out much of their earlier work either.
