A Fine Woman

Born eighty years ago, Marina was named after the family business. From the time she could walk, Marina was stacking bins. By age ten, she was cutting bait; and by fifteen, was taking trawlers out and throwing cages.

At age thirty, it was Marina’s idea to invest in a touring ferry. Her pretty little sister, Dinghy, captained it. When Marina was forty, Pa and Mum, worn down by lives of hard labor, were able to lay aside the ropes and scales.

Marina never married, but Dinghy met a fine man from town. They’ve given them many descendants to carry on.

Reads like a page from a historical novel. Love the names for the girls. Pa and Mum certainly loved their sea life but I wonder if ending the legacy might have been a better idea!

My daughter had a friend named Boat when she was in preschool. We never did get the story of the name, but I’m sure something similar was involved. (K)

  8. Some folks live to work, while others work to live. At the end of the day, either philosophy is fine, as long as an individual is happy with what they’re doing and don’t become a burden to others.

    1. Lisa or Li's avatar msjadeli says:

Amen! Sometimes becoming a burden to others is involuntary though. That’s why a society needs to have workable options in place to help the vulnerable. I think we do OK now, but we could do better.
