I’m back….. in the cyber saddle again UPDATE

A leak in the atrium killed my old PC  (hard drive has yet to be determined alive or dead.)  Just got this new one delivered and thankfully remembered my password for it and my email account.  It’s going to be a royal pain if the old hard drive died, not only for all of the passwords but the loss of all writing and pictures (except what’s been saved on WP.)  My printer drivers are not able to be upgraded as far as I know so that will mean buying a new printer.  The scanner (which used to be a scanner/printer) shows that it is working.  So much to figure out and it comes at a bad time, when I’m going for a job interview next week — yes, folks, I may have a full time job in the near future.

Will plan on responding to all comments soon.  Wish me luck, on getting this new beast set up and on the interview next week.

UPDATE:  The Hard Drive is good!  Older son ordered an adaptor the right size for the old HD and installed it into it tonight.  The adaptor plugs into a USB adaptor that fits into a small slot on the PC.  The new computer has twice as much storage on it as the other, so easy to copy everything over from the old HD.  Technology is amazing.

I also printed out the sheet for passwords, but edited it with the new passwords I’ve had to create since the flood.

me too, Trent. I should have printed those passwords out. The thought of having to change them all… And yes the writing and photos are valuable to put it mildly.

Good luck with the hard drive, and also with the job!
I lost all my computer files about 20 years ago, and since then I try to be good about backing them up on a portable drive every few months that I keep in my storage room. I still regret some of that art I lost. Luckily it was before I took digital photos.

My passwords are kept the old-fashioned way, in a little book. Although I need to make a copy to also stash in the storage room. A task for the new year.

I should know by tomorrow if it’s still good (it didn’t appear to get wet, but when the power box (whatever it’s called) went out it could have done something to it. I had/have all passwords in a word file but I neglected to print it out :( Maybe I should have been storing everything in the cloud but then that has its own set of risks.

Fandango sorry to hear about your laptop. Glad it was not your primary device. The new one works fine, but slower, and will have to wait to see if old hd works or I will be creating a mess of new passwords. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

  8. Hi Lisa, I had the same thing happen to me in about October last year and I lost some stuff. My upsetting was a new poem and a new short story that was nearly finished and not saved anywhere else. I hope you can salvage your hard drive as I couldn’t. Best of luck with the job interview. That will result in some changes for you, working makes a big difference to your available time for other things, obviously.

Oh that’s not good. But seems you are getting things started up okay so far. I’d be okay with my passwords, as they are all written in a little notebook, and all photos are on my phone. Most of my stories are written in spirals first, but I’m sure I’d miss a lot of spur of the moment poems and things like that. Good luck on your interview!!! :)

Good luck with the job interview and the changes full-time employment will bring, and with sorting out your hard drive. I hope it’s retrievable; computers are so great until they are not. It might be overkill, but I have everything in the cloud, plus an external HD, and another I keep at a brother’s and swap them periodically. A password manager is a really useful tool if, like me, you have countless passwords and want strong, different ones for every account. Good luck with it all!

Stacey it’s been a loooong 4 or so days! Adaptor was ordered yesterday (hopefully not from amazon!) by son and hoping it gets here soon.

Having a lot of time to think about things this winter while stoking the fire and a few incidents has pushed me into doing a job that suits my job skills. So nervous about the interview — I usually end up trying to be clever and put my foot in my mouth. Praying I can keep it together. Thanks much for the well-wishing, my friend. <3

Maybe something will open up in the next 6 months, but I did tell them I don’t want the early shift (have never been a morning person.) Jules, thanks much on the job situation. It’s in their hands now.

I’ll be heartbroken if I lose the pics. Almost all pics shared on WP have been “shrunk” to minimize databytes used, so if the originals are lost it will be horrible. So many family pics :( This new computer is pre-loaded with Windows II and Edge browser by default. I’m beta testing Edge and so far so good.

Yes, older son has properly chastised me for not having a password book. I saved all passwords on a computer doc, so if I had had to take it in for repair the tech would have access to all of them. Will be buying one asap.

With the leak in the atrium, when the sun came out and melted everything, no drips. I already had the whole roof recaulked a few years ago, but they didn’t do a great job of it.

Yes in spring seeds! Soon! Looking forward to it.
